🦋 SEE LITTLE MOTHS FLYING UP WHEN YOU MOW? PAY ATTENTION! 🌱

Have you noticed small moths fluttering up out of your grass when you mow or walk across the lawn? You may be seeing sod webworm moths.

We’re seeing activity right now, and while the moths themselves aren’t what damages your lawn, their larvae can be a problem.

Sod webworm larvae hide down in the turf and feed on grass blades, often at night. As their numbers increase, you may begin noticing:

• Brown or thinning areas in the lawn
• Grass that looks drought-stressed even though it’s getting water
• Chewed or ragged grass blades
• Small moths flying up as you mow or walk through the yard

⚠️ One of the easiest clues is exactly what you see in this video: mowing or walking through the grass causes numerous little moths to suddenly flutter up and then quickly settle back down.

And here's the tricky part — in our South Alabama heat, insect damage can easily be mistaken for heat or drought stress.

If you're seeing this in your lawn, don't ignore it. Catching turf pests early can make a BIG difference before noticeable damage spreads.

👀 Are you seeing spots like these in your lawn?

If your yard is starting to develop patches like the ones in these photos, don't panic! This is something we see all the time during the heat of a South Alabama summer.

These "hot spots" can develop from:
☀️ Intense afternoon sun
🔥 Heat reflecting off driveways, sidewalks, and roads
🌱 Sandy soils that dry out quickly
💦 Irrigation that isn't reaching every area evenly
🌳 Tree roots competing for moisture

The best thing you can do is water deeply in the early morning and make sure those dry areas are getting adequate coverage. A healthy, well-maintained lawn is much more resilient during these long stretches of heat.
