A passion can slowly become something that possesses the person rather than serves them.
Mastering craftsmanship and custom cabinetry was supposed to be a satisfying outlet, not a tormenting addiction. How does that happen? How does a casual hobby slowly grow into a full-fledged curse?
Ask any addict where they started. Listen to their story. The truth has a way of revealing itself.
There is no perspective shift that magically transforms addiction into something good. Don't get me wrong. I loved the indulgence of creating something special for people and the rush that came with delivering the finished result. There is something deeply satisfying about taking an idea that exists only in someone's imagination and placing it into their hands.
But like any drug, the longer you indulge it, the more it changes your mind, your body, your psychology, and your spirit. Not every change is for the better.
The tragedy of addiction is that it rarely announces itself. It disguises itself as dedication. It calls itself passion. It rewards you just enough to keep you coming back until one day you realize you are no longer mastering the craft. The craft has mastered you.
