Q3 Outreach Recap

Another few months of getting out into the community has been completed! This quarter, we’ve enjoyed meeting Lexington residents, stopping by civic events, and finding new ways to share what’s happening in planning. Whether we’re talking about ongoing projects or answering questions about how planning works, we love having the chance to connect with the community.

Thanks for making your voices heard and taking an interest in Lexington’s future. We’re already looking forward to the next opportunity for conversations!

The Planning word of the day is “Activate,” to activate a space means to intentionally provide and arrange engaging amenities and uses such as places to eat, shop, or people-watch for a specific user group or the broader community. Activity should be sustained throughout the day, noting context-sensitive hours near residential areas, by a variety of uses: for example a bakery open in the morning, offices during the day, and restaurants in the evening.quality of life.

The August edition of Sounds Like a Plan is here!

Lexington now has a new plan for the future of downtown. The Downtown Area Master Plan, recently approved by the Planning Commission, creates a vision for a downtown that is growing, greener, welcoming, and easier to get around. The plan is based on community input and focuses on housing, businesses, visitors, green spaces, transportation, and support for people experiencing homelessness. It also defines three areas of downtown for the first time: the Central Business District, Downtown Core, and Midtown. To help put the plan into action, the Planning Commission has started a Zoning Ordinance Text Amendment (ZOTA) that would update the rules for downtown business zones. The ZOTA would not change anyone’s zoning, but would make it easier to build the types of housing, businesses, and public spaces recommended in the plan while helping protect what makes downtown special.
