Beat the Heat at Home

-Optimize your thermostat: Set your thermostat to at least 75°F when you're home, and raise it a few degrees when you are away.
-Leverage fans: Use ceiling fans to create a wind-chill effect, which makes the room feel up to 4 degrees cooler. Make sure your ceiling fan rotates counterclockwise in the summer to push air down.
-Block sunlight: Close blinds, drapes, and shades on south and west-facing windows during the hottest parts of the day (12 p.m. to 4 p.m.).
-Use heat-generating appliances wisely: Avoid using the oven or stove in the afternoon. Cook outdoors, use a microwave, or rely on a slow cooker instead. Limit the use of heat-producing appliances like clothes dryers during peak daytime hours.

Lowering Your Power Bill

-Change your air filters: Check and replace or clean your HVAC filters monthly. Dirty filters force your system to work longer and harder, which drastically spikes your energy usage.
-Utilize off-peak hours: If your provider (such as Duke Energy or Lexington Utilities) has Time-of-Use rates, run dishwashers, washing machines, and dryers during off-peak hours (typically early morning or late at night) to pay less per kilowatt-hour.
-Leverage local rebates and programs: Lexington, NC residents can utilize the Lexington Utilities Rebate Program to earn credits for upgrading to energy-efficient HVAC systems or water heaters. Customers can also take advantage of Duke Energy's Home Improvement Rebates to access up to $5,075 in savings for attic insulation, duct sealing, and HVAC replacements.
