One advantage I have over many designers is more than a decade spent in landscape maintenance. That experience gives me a practical understanding of how a landscape actually functions day to day, not just how it looks on paper. I know the comfortable turning radiuses for different mowers, the minimum width needed for healthy turf, which mulch types perform best in specific conditions and what care each plant needs - all of which are crucial in designing a low-maintenance yard.

The number one request I receive is for low-maintenance landscaping, and achieving that requires thoughtful decisions at every level. Many assume low maintenance means more lawn and fewer planting beds, but the opposite is often true. Turf is typically the most demanding element in a landscape, requiring frequent mowing, watering, and upkeep throughout the growing season.

Plant selection and spacing are critical. Overplanting may look full initially, but it quickly creates overcrowding and ongoing maintenance issues. Underplanting leaves gaps that invite w**ds. Designing for a plant’s mature size is essential to strike the right balance.

Incorporating well-spaced plants along with larger perennials can add structure, seasonal color, and act as a natural w**d barrier. Ultimately, low-maintenance landscapes don’t happen by accident—they result from intentional, informed design decisions that ensure the space works with you, not against you.

Modern architecture demands modern landscaping. This boldly unique Celtic Works house doesn’t have it but we are working on changing all of that.
Pulling the simple straight line, square architecture out into the landscape with a bold pergola extending from the house and rectangular concrete pads for a path brings this whole property together while accenting the strong features on this house.

This one is “for the birds”
When this client contacted us, they had just had a large tree taken down which opened up huge potential. She is a bird photographer so rather than focusing on the one bed, we redesigned their entire backyard into a bird sanctuary. Already home to over 20 species, natural food sources, cover, different habitats and lots of great photo op props will give this backyard plenty of life for years to come.

With spring just around the corner, it’s a good time to talk about outdoor rooms. Interest in these spaces surged around 2020 as people spent more time at home and began rethinking how they used their outdoor areas. When done well, outdoor rooms add real value, functionally and privacy. They can be spaces for entertaining, relaxing, or retreating, and the best ones have a quiet, romantic pull that keeps drawing you back. As with any landscape investment, placement, design, and functionality will determine whether the space succeeds or disappoints. Most of the time, these space are left incomplete and lack the impact homeowners’s were desiring.

Placement comes first. The space should be easy to access but still feel intimate. If it’s too hidden, it won’t get used; too exposed, and it loses its charm. Ideally, an outdoor room connects naturally to a main pathway, patio, or deck. Ground-level or slightly sunken spaces often feel more enclosed and inviting.

Functionality is just as critical. Decide how the space will be used—outdoor kitchen, fire pit, lounge, or reading nook. This defines the size, shape, and layout and prevents costly regrets later.

Design creates the atmosphere. Successful outdoor rooms feel enclosed without feeling trapped. Trees, arbors, and thoughtfully scaled plantings act as walls and ceilings. A general rule rule of 3:1 length-to-height ratio feels open and comfortable; 1:1 creates intimacy but only when plant choices are right.

Finally, lighting makes the space usable at night and sets the mood while elevating it to a whole new level.

Don’t leave your outdoor investments to any landscaper or AI program when it takes a desiner to make it all come together.

Yard art is a simple way to add personality to a landscape. It includes anything that isn’t a plant—boulders, statuary, decorative pots, even hardscape like paths and patios. When used intentionally, these elements can elevate a design from good to exceptional.

Statuary and pots, in particular, can influence how people experience a space on a psychological level. Humans naturally respond to faces and direction. If a statue is looking a certain way, we instinctively follow its gaze. Positioned toward the viewer, it creates a stopping point; angled away, it guides movement.

Pots work through repetition. Using the same color or style along a line pulls the eye through the landscape. Instead of just holding plants, they help shape how people move and interact with the design.

Purposeful placement turns ordinary landscapes into meaningful spaces
