Employee Spotlight Q3 2023: Travis Evans, Northeast Driver
Hometown: Winnsboro, SC
Began at Capital: August 2017
About Travis:
I was born and raised in Fairfield County. I attended Winnsboro High School. I go to church at St. Peters Community Church in Blair and serve as a trustee there. I am happily married and have 3 children-- 2 boys and 1 girl; 1 in Texas and 2 here nearby. And I also have 5 grandchildren between age 6 and 16.
Passions and Interests:
- Carpentry and yard work, just staying active and productive
- Working on cars, especially love old cars- I have a 1968 Thunderbird Custom that I love
- Church- I love the Lord and I am very active in my church. I understand it a lot better than I used to.
- DJ- used to do clubs, but then I got married, so I mostly just DJ in the yard for cookouts and family gatherings.
- Favorite Vacation: I enjoy going to Charleston-- Folly Beach is my favorite. We like doing our anniversary down there.
- Favorite Music to Listen to While Driving: I’m always listening to music while driving. I like R&B and Soul the best- King George, The Temptations, others like them are my favorites.
Work Background:
I’ve been driving a concrete mixer almost 20 years. I started out in CDL driving working over the road; when I got ready to get off the road, I wanted to do something different and I got into concrete. I was at Hardaway Concrete for several years, then went back to over the road for a bit, and then the nuclear plant called and I worked there 5 or 6 years. When that closed down and I was laid off, I called Capital on a Friday and interviewed that next Monday, and I’ve been working here ever since. Driving a front discharge mixer is sort of like riding a motorcycle because you’re driving in the middle of the road- so I gave up riding motorcycles.
What is Your Favorite Thing about Capital?
We really are a team— we don’t think in terms of “I” here, we all think in terms of we as a team. Everybody is genuine- from guys at the plant to the ladies in the office. I’ve worked at all the
plants and been in and out of the office a lot and it really is a team. We know each other on a personal level, we know each other as people. We get together outside of work and spend time together. I want this to be my last stop working. At my first safety meeting, I remember I asked Rusty a question and he answered me like I was heard and he was a good man— and that’s what I always wanted: to work for and with good people.
I enjoy seeing things that I helped build, places I like to go and things I like to do— and I was a part of building it. Each job has a story, and every day is a different story.
My coworkers are like my brothers and sisters. I know they’re all looking out for me and helping me. We have real unity here. It has just been a real good experience to me. I am honored to be recognized but I really want the team to be spotlighted, not about me but about we.
Quote from Manager:
“Travis is the type of guy that don’t meet a stranger. Travis is a once in a generation type of person. There’s never a time when he is not willing to help anyone in need. Travis has a lot of wisdom and is a great inspiration and he is that guy that makes you better just being around him.”- Chris Green, Northeast Plant Manager
