Plumbing knowledge of the day:

In 2015 water heater manufactures changed their manufacturing requirements. This also means,  installation manuals changed their requirements for installing water heaters. This has been a big Plumbing debate for years, because unfortunately international Plumbing code, and uniform Plumbing code did not keep up with this requirement. To simplify what I’m saying is the installation manual always out-trump‘s international code, or state code. Makes sense, right? The manufacturer knows how they want it installed.🤦‍♂️ I can’t believe I have to argue with people about that all the time!

Also to add to that if your water heater was installed after 2015, and does not have an expansion tank, and check valve. Then your water heater is subject to thermal expansion failure, like this 6 year old water heater.

So many plumbers like to argue that they don’t need check valves.
However, if you’re not closing down the system, stopping water from pushing back into the original system, activating the expansion tank.
You are not relieving the thermal expansion from the water heater.

If I can be honest!

This drives me crazy!

This example is why I always say: Everyone is a plumber, until the “Real Plumber” shows up!

Even though this helps us stand out as a company, and plumbers.

I still believe it’s wrong.

This customer had the same local plumbing company out over 10 times. To make repairs on this polybutylene pipe! I was told they never once offered a full replacement. So instead of making proper repairs, they went to Lowe’s and got compression fittings, and shark bite fittings, and repaired the leaks.  please understand that unfortunately these fittings are still Plumbing code regulated. But I ask you to also keep in mind that Plumbing codes are literally in place as bare minimum requirements. 

When I arrived, just in this section of the home had 10 repairs, I believe 6 were leaking. Not to mention 2 leaks on the original fittings as well.

My point is:
just because they are a licensed, bonded, and insured plumbing contractor. Sadly, does not mean that they are going to do the job correctly!
