The Space Around the Pool Matters Just as Much as the Pool.

When planning a new pool, it's natural to focus on the water.

How big should it be? What shape? Where should the spa go?

But here's a design decision that's just as important:

How much space do you need around it?

Think about what will actually happen there.

Lounge chairs need room.

People need comfortable pathways to move around the pool.

Outdoor dining needs space beyond the table itself.

Kids need room to come and go.

And when friends and family gather, a deck that looked generous on a plan can suddenly feel very different in real life.

More decking isn't automatically better, either.

The goal is proportion.

The pool, patio, furniture, landscaping and open areas should work together so the backyard feels intentional, comfortable and connected to the home.

That's why we don't just ask what you want your pool to look like.

We want to understand how you plan to live around it.

Because sometimes the most important part of a pool design...

isn't in the water at all.

A normal day inside BMR can include designers working through plans, project managers solving the next challenge, selections being finalized, permits moving forward, schedules being coordinated, customers stopping by and plenty of conversations happening between departments.

There are a lot of people and a lot of decisions behind every finished project you see us share.

A week like this makes one backyard design decision very easy to appreciate: shade.

When you're designing outdoor living in North Texas, it's not enough to think about how a backyard looks.

You have to think about how it lives.

Where does the afternoon sun fall?

Where will everyone gather when it's 100° outside?

Does the covered patio provide enough usable space?

Where will your lounge furniture sit?

How does the pool relate to the shaded areas around it?

These decisions may not be the first things you notice in a beautiful finished photograph.

But on a Texas afternoon in August?

You notice them.

That's why thoughtful outdoor design considers more than the pool. It considers the environment around it and how your family will actually use the space.

At this point, we're pretty sure the most popular seat in the house has moved outside...and directly into the water.

Record heat certainly has a way of reminding you how nice it is to have a place to cool off without leaving home.

So we're keeping today's question simple:
