You turned the heat on for the first time... and now something smells like it’s burning. 😳
Before you panic, that doesn’t always mean something is wrong.
After sitting unused for months, dust can collect inside your heating system and create a temporary burning or dusty smell when the furnace first kicks on.
But if the smell doesn’t fade, keeps coming back, smells electrical or like melting plastic, or you notice smoke, that’s different.
The first startup is also a good time to test your carbon monoxide detectors, make sure they’re working properly, and replace batteries if needed.
