A bright bloomer slowly being banned, state by state.

Although the Bradford/Callery Pear tree often gives a nice appeal to properties due to it's bloom, the pros are outweighed by the cons.

If you may have this species on your property, it's a good idea to inspect the main stem periodically for points of structural weakness, and infestation.

This species is very susceptible to damage later in life due to it's relative growth pattern producing mainly weak stem attachments. The tensile strength of the wood is also low, making it more prone to damage.

Upon my assessment of the species throughout my career, they also seem very prone to infestations (wood boring beetles). If you may see a number of holes in a horizontal line, that points to an infestation.

"Let them breath" It's a term i hear widely from other educated arborists in my field relating to seeing trees that are mulched improperly. The method promotes complications in a trees health, and could lead to a quicker demise.

Fortunately, there is a quick resolution if performed soon enough.. simply remove some of the mulch. The main difference between them is that you can see where the roots start to flare out. In simple terms, it lets the base of the tree 'breath' easier.
