One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned after 25 years in carpentry is that quality cannot depend only on memory.
At Eric’s Woodwork, I’ve started converting our construction methods into internal SOP manuals for built-ins, fireplace walls, cabinet assemblies, and floating shelf systems.
The goal is simple:
Create repeatable standards for layout, framing, tolerances, anchoring, material allowances, and final verification.
Custom woodworking will always require judgment, but a documented process helps protect quality, train future installers, reduce field mistakes, and make the business more scalable.
This is a small behind-the-scenes look at the systems we’re building behind the finished product.
The customer sees the final built-in.
We see the centerline, the framing logic, the tolerances, the structural backing, the cabinet layout, the trim allowances, and the quality-control checkpoints that made it possible.

🤣 THE BLUE TAPE INCIDENT 🤣

Yesterday's lesson: Sometimes the repair takes less time than marking the repair.

We finished this decorative wall and told Grey, "If you see any touch-ups tomorrow, just let me know."

The next morning, Grey took that assignment VERY seriously.

One tiny flaw? Blue tape.

Another tiny flaw? Blue tape.

Same piece of molding? More blue tape.

By the time I came back, the wall looked like it had caught a rare case of Smurfpox. 🔵

Grey proudly announced:
"I marked everything!"

That's when I had to explain one of the great secrets of carpentry:

👉 One piece of tape tells us to inspect the entire section.

We don't fix one nail hole at a time. We inspect the whole piece.

After peeling off enough tape to gift-wrap a small car, one quick pass with sandpaper fixed most of the "emergency."

Rosalyn's favorite line:

"So the tape defects now outnumber the wall defects?"

Pretty much. 😂

Contractor Tip:
One piece of tape = Helpful.
Fifty pieces of tape = New project.

Every angle of this bay window was measured, laid out, and built from scratch. There were no stock cabinets, no prefabricated parts, and no shortcuts. Every section was custom fit to follow the architecture of the room while maximizing storage and maintaining clean, symmetrical lines.

What started as an empty corner became a custom furniture-grade built-in designed specifically for this home.

This kitchen bay window had great natural light and beautiful architecture, but it wasn't being fully utilized. Our goal was to create something that looked like it had always been part of the house while adding functionality, storage, and comfortable seating.

Every angle was measured, modeled, and built to fit this space exactly. From the initial design and layout to the custom framework, face frames, trim details, and final finish work, every step was completed with precision and attention to detail.

The result is a custom bay window seating area with hidden storage, furniture-quality craftsmanship, and a seamless built-in appearance that complements the home's architecture.

One of my favorite parts of this project is how the finished piece doesn't look "added on." It looks like it belongs there.
