If your door starts down, then reverses and goes right back up, the problem usually isn't the door or the opener. It's the two small sensors sitting about six inches off the ground on either side of the opening.
Every residential opener made since January 1, 1993 is required to have them. They shoot an invisible beam across the doorway, and if anything interrupts it, the door refuses to close. That includes a cobweb, a smudge of dust on the lens, a bike leaned against the bracket, or afternoon sun hitting the lens at the wrong angle.
Wipe both lenses with a dry cloth and make sure they're pointed straight at each other. If one light is blinking, it's out of alignment. If they're clean, aligned, and it still reverses, the wiring or the opener logic board is next, and that's where we come in.

Here's a test you can run in 30 seconds that tells you more than any inspection checklist.
Pull the red release cord to disconnect the opener. Lift the door manually to about waist height. Let go.
If it stays put, your door is balanced and your springs are doing their job. If it slides down or shoots up, the springs are out of balance and your opener is carrying weight it was never built to carry. That's how openers burn out years early.

Your garage door tells you what's wrong before it breaks. You just have to know the language.
POP: a loud bang, usually once. That's almost always a broken spring. Stop using the door and call someone.
GRIND: metal on metal during travel. Worn rollers or a track that's out of alignment.
RATTLE: shaking and clatter the whole way up. Loose hardware, and it's the easiest of the three to fix.

Nobody thinks about their garage door until it stops working. But it's opening and closing about 1,500 times a year, and a standard builder-grade spring is only rated for 10,000 cycles. Do the math and you get a door that quits somewhere around year seven, usually on the coldest morning of the year.
