Understanding Roof Shingle Weather Ratings

In addition to fire resistance ratings, roof shingles are also classified based on their ability to withstand impacts from hail and windstorms. This rating system helps homeowners select shingles appropriate for their local climate conditions.

UL 2218 Impact Resistance Ratings
Shingles that pass UL's 2218 testing standard earn an impact resistance rating. There are four classes:

Class 4 - The highest rating. These shingles survived being struck by 2-inch steel balls fired at 90 mph with no damage.

Class 3 - Rated for surviving 1.75-inch steel balls at 90 mph.

Class 2 - Can withstand 1.5-inch steel balls at 70 mph impacts.

Class 1 - The lowest rating, able to resist 1.25-inch steel balls at 67 mph.

Unrated shingles have not undergone impact testing. Impact-resistant shingles cost more but provide better protection in hail-prone regions.

Wind Resistance Ratings
Shingles are also tested for their ability to stay intact during high winds. Wind ratings indicate the maximum wind speed the shingles can uphold based on factors like:

*Adhesive strip strength
*Interlocking design
*Sealant quality
*Installation method

Common wind ratings range from a minimum of 60 mph for most 3-tab shingles to 130+ mph for specialized interlocking designs. ASTM D3161 is the standard wind test procedure.

Homeowners in coastal areas or regions prone to tornadoes will want shingles with enhanced wind ratings to prevent premature shingle blow-off.

Other Climate Factors
In addition to impact and wind, other climate considerations may influence shingle selection such as:

*UV resistance in very sunny areas
*Algae resistance in warm, humid environments
*Cold weather flexibility for freeze/thaw cycles

A professional roofer can recommend the ideal shingle class ratings based on your home's location and typical weather patterns. Exceeding minimum standards provides better durability.
