Remember when the crazy person at the protest was hugging a tree?
We do. And honestly, we kind of miss that guy.
The old liberals were a different breed. They chained themselves to redwoods, sang folk songs, and passed out flowers at airports. They were wrong about plenty, but you knew where their hearts were. They loved clean rivers, they loved the working man, and they defended free speech even when it cost them.
Here is the part people forget. Those liberals were patriots. They argued about America because they believed in America. They wanted to fix the system, not burn it down. The union hall had an American flag on the wall, and nobody thought twice about it.
Fast forward to today.
The tree huggers have been shoved aside by people waving red flags and calling themselves democratic socialists. The soft word "democratic" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. Strip it away and the platform is simple, more government control over your healthcare, your energy, your speech, and your paycheck.
They call it equality. History calls it something else. When government controls everything, everyone ends up equally poor, except the people running the government. That experiment has been run over and over, and it ends the same way every time.
The Founders built a system of limited government precisely because they knew concentrated power always corrupts. The old liberals, for all their flaws, still operated inside that system. The new crowd wants to replace it.
So yes, we miss the lunatics of old. The flower children were annoying, but they were our annoying. They hugged trees. Today's radicals want to hug your wallet, your business, and your Bill of Rights.
Give us the guy in the tie-dye shirt any day.
