A brief digression about birds in the trees and curious neighbors wondering what we are doing. You think neighbor Andy will show up to Tree Talks?

Today we got Dr. Ben Sikes in a tree to give us an idea of what he will be talking about at Tree Talks on Tuesday.

Ben is a microbial ecologist whose research focuses on soil fungi, their community interactions, stress tolerance, and use in ecosystem management.

We are looking forward to seeing everybody at Northside Social at 6pm on Tuesday.

It’s Arbor Day here in KS. Arbor Day was founded by our neighbors up north in Nebraska as an annual celebration of trees in the last Friday of April. We celebrate trees everyday, as should you. Go out there and give a tree a hug today and every day. Since this celebration fall on a Friday, it is also tie-dye Friday. We’ve been wearing these shirts every Friday for a few years so it’s time to make more. Holler if you want a LawArb Tie-dye shirt. Cheers.

Today we rigged out some pretty large storm damaged branches from a cottonwood. Yesterday, we had the opportunity to talk with Megan Kaminski’s students about trees, insects, forestry, arboriculture in Marvin Grove in the KU campus. Megan is a very talented and inspiring poet, educator, friend, colleague AND Tree Talks Alum. The next Tree Talks is in less than a week. The class we met with is part of the Environmental Studies Program at KU. It’s called “Care Practices: Ecology, Community, Self”

This interdisciplinary course explores practices of care for the ecologies and communities of which we are a part—as well as liberatory modes of self-care. It explores our local ecologies through field trips and community-engaged learning and connect what students learn to larger environmental issues, including species extinction, climate change, and the uneven distribution of harms across people and place.

We don’t post much, let alone two of the same tree, but these two shots were sent to us by the homeowner a few days later and we thought they were neat so here they are. Had to share the smooth rigging and trunk falling. Listen to the sound as the trunk of this white pine snapped in half upon landing. It reverberated for blocks. A super fun day with the whole LawArb crew. It was such a fun day and truly wonderful having in tow working with us for the day. For real, check out his episode from a few years ago. It does not disappoint.

Another tie-dye fridye and a beautiful day it has been. Picked up a vertec at the expo and been climbing on it all week, getting I’d dialed in. It’s been fun so far. See you in the trees.

A spicy performance by two Imperial moths. These large, lemon-yellow moths have a wingspan of 4-6 inches with a gorgeous lemon-yellow marked with reddish brown and blackish specs. 😍. The larvae feed on leaves of maple, sycamore, and sassafras.
