We can't share too much info about summer's stress on our roses and how to help them beat the heat.

July in Alabama is no joke. With temperatures climbing into the 90s, your roses need a little extra attention to keep looking their best.

Here are a few simple tasks that will help them power through the hottest part of the season:

• Water deeply once a week, or more often for newly planted roses, container roses, or during extended periods of extreme heat.
• Continue your regular fertilizing schedule.
• Deadhead spent blooms to encourage more flowers.
• Replenish mulch as needed to help retain moisture and keep roots cooler.

If you only do one thing this month, make it watering. Deep, consistent watering is the single best thing you can do for your roses during the heat of summer. Healthy roots lead to healthier plants and better blooms when cooler weather returns.

Old-fashioned lawn sprinklers are a good way to cool down your roses during heat waves. This picture was taken two years ago but we had the sprinklers going yesterday!

This is good advice since temps in SC are scorching this week. It's especially important for roses in containers because they are getting heat from all sides.
