Howard County runs its fall Big Shred this Saturday, October 17, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There are four sites, and the closest one to us is the North Laurel Community Center on Wh***ey Bottom Road. They stop when the trucks are full, so earlier is better than later.

If what you have is paper, go. It is the right answer and it costs you nothing but the drive.

Here is where we are the better call. A shred truck takes documents. It does not take the filing cabinet the documents lived in, or the particle board desk it sat under, or the four boxes of binders and manuals that are not worth feeding through a shredder page by page. That part is a truck job, and it is usually what people are still looking at on Sunday afternoon.

Take the paper to the shred. Call us about the furniture it came out of.

The pool table has not been a pool table since about 2019.

Today it is holding folded laundry, three delivery boxes, a bag of cables, and the good tablecloth. There is a cue on the floor underneath it that nobody has picked up in a year.

Here is the thing about a pool table. It is too good to throw out and too heavy to move, so it quietly becomes the most expensive shelf in the house. Nobody decided that. It just happened one load of laundry at a time.

If yours has a second job, tell us what it is. So far we have heard laundry, homework, and one lending library.

The project finished in June. The leftovers are still parked where the car goes.

Half a box of tile, the good offcuts you kept in case of a repair, two lengths of baseboard, and a five gallon bucket of something. Every piece was kept for a sensible reason, and the sensible reason has not come up once in four months.

Now it is October and the car is about to start caring where it sleeps.

Keep the tile. Genuinely, keep the tile. The rest can go before the first frost makes the decision for you.

What is still left over from your last project?

The pool came down at the end of August and the ring of dead grass is still there.

The liner is folded over the fence. The pump is in the shed, probably. Three wall panels are stacked behind the garage where they have started to rust, and the ladder is somewhere in the hydrangeas.

Which is the thing about taking a pool down yourself. A pool out of the ground is not gone. It is distributed.

Everything left over loads in a single visit, and the lawn gets the rest of the autumn to close that circle.

What is still scattered around your yard from a summer that already ended?

Where stuff goes: sometimes into a river, deliberately.

In London, a printer named Cobden-Sanderson fell out with his business partner. They could not agree on who owned the typeface they had made together.

So he took the metal type down to Hammersmith Bridge at night. He did it again and again, between 1913 and 1917, and dropped all of it into the Thames. Roughly a ton of lead letters, gone.

Nearly a century later, a designer called Robert Green rebuilt those letters on a computer. He worked from old printed books, one shape at a time. Then in 2014 he walked out on the Thames mud at low tide and found three pieces of the real type. He rang the Port of London Authority. Their divers brought up about 150 more.

A hundred years underwater, and the letters still worked.

This is the kind of story we collect. Almost nothing is finished just because one person decided it was.

What is the best thing you have ever pulled out of an attic, a basement, or somebody's curb?

Couches and a mattress, up and out of a basement. On a mattress the stairs are the entire job, and the turn at the bottom is what other people say no to.

Here is what Ella said afterward:

"Karioki and Freddy were very nice. They removed my couches and a mattress from the basement. Highly recommended!"

Two people who have done it before make that look like nothing at all. It is not nothing. It is just practice.

The city of Laurel posts its shred and e-cycle days on its own calendar, which is worth a look before a move. Paper you can handle in an afternoon.

What you cannot handle in an afternoon is the cabinet the paper lived in, the shelf above it and the boxes underneath. That is the half with no ride booked, and it is one visit.

The clawfoot tub is beautiful and it is cast iron and it is upstairs. All three of those facts are working against you at once.

You have already looked up what one weighs. You did not enjoy the number. Two people have looked at it and made the face that means no, and by now you have started describing it apologetically, as though wanting it out of your own bathroom were an unreasonable request.

It is not. This is the part worth saying plainly: nobody on this crew is going to sigh at it, and nobody is going to ask how it got up there in the first place. Somebody carried it up, so somebody can carry it down.

Tell us the object and what the stairs look like. Let the corner it supposedly cannot clear be our problem.

Anyone else got something upstairs that got in and has never come out?

A piano is not just heavy. It is tall, it is top-heavy, and it has to leave through doorways and past walls that were painted long after it arrived.

A Laurel customer called us about one and got a pickup the same day. Karioki and Seth brought it out of the house, and here is what Darcy wrote afterward:

"Spartan Junk Removal was able to schedule my pickup the same day I called. Karioki and Seth arrived on time in a large red truck with the logo. These two young men were courteous and efficient. I appreciate how careful they were as they removed a piano out of my house so as not to damage anything. I will definitely call Spartan again!"

So as not to damage anything. On a piano job, that is the whole assignment. If there is one in your house that nobody plays anymore, ask us about it.

Some jobs are just heavy and awkward, and a backyard hot tub is near the top of the list: too big for the gate, too heavy to tip, and full of corners that fight back. A Laurel homeowner had one hauled out, crew and all, and here is what they said afterward: 'Excellent service! Very professional, friendly and respectful of my property. We had a large hot tub removed and Karioki, Seamus, Malik and Tommy were an amazing team.' Respectful of the property is the part we care about most. If something in your yard has overstayed its welcome, we will get it out clean.
