🌱 October planting season is here in Las Vegas!

While gardens in colder climates may be winding down, here in the desert we’re stepping into one of the most exciting growing seasons of the year.

In my new What to Plant & Do in October video, I’m sharing what can go into the garden now, what I’m planting in my own Zone 9A garden, and the garden jobs I’m tackling as we transition out of our long, hot summer.

We’re talking cool-season vegetables, flowers, succession planting, garden maintenance and a few things that make gardening in Las Vegas a little different from simply following a generic Zone 9 planting calendar.

The full October Fall Planting Guide is now on Curious Greens YouTube. 🌿

If you’re gardening in Las Vegas or another hot, dry climate, come garden with me. And if you know another desert gardener trying to figure out what to plant this month, share this with them!

I have not perfected starting onions from seed. This is my second year giving it a try. They are not impressive. So I tossed them out and ordered a sampler pack of starts from Dixondale Farms. They were reasonably priced at $17.50 for 48 onion plants (more than enough for us) and will deliver right on time for transplanting.

In the meantime, I’m editing my next video, What to Plant and Do in October | Las Vegas Zone 9A.

Stay tuned.

September in the desert garden means it’s time to start thinking about what’s happening under the soil. 🌱🥕

I’m direct sowing my fall root crops, including carrots, beets, radishes, parsnips and daikon, and taking you along as another piece of the fall garden begins.

Gardening in Las Vegas means learning that the calendar and the weather don’t always agree. It may still feel like summer outside, but there are seeds that can go into the ground now for the cooler months ahead.

And one of my favorite things about growing root vegetables? You do all this work, stare at what appears to be an empty patch of dirt for weeks, and just have to trust that something wonderful is happening underneath. 😂

The new video is up on Curious Greens YouTube. Come garden with me!

What root crops are you growing this fall?

I grew this just to cut it down. 🌱

This buckwheat wasn’t planted for a harvest. I grew it as a cover crop to protect the soil, attract pollinators and add organic matter back into the bed.

Now that summer is ending, I’m harvesting what remains, clearing the bed and chopping the buckwheat down to work it into the soil.

But what happens next? In the full YouTube video, I show the amendments I add and how I prepare this bed for fall planting.

It’s all coming out. 🌱

Some of my summer plants were still alive—but alive and productive are not always the same thing.

Fall planting season arrives quickly here in Las Vegas, so I’m harvesting what remains, removing the peppers and basil, cutting down my buckwheat cover crop, and refreshing the soil for what comes next.

Sometimes growing a new garden begins with finally allowing the last season to end.

September in the Las Vegas garden is here, but the weather still gets the final vote. ☀️🌱

There’s plenty we can start growing for fall right now, but that doesn’t mean the entire summer garden needs to disappear overnight.

I’m talking about what to plant in September, what I’m waiting a little longer to plant, which summer crops are staying, and the garden tasks I’m focusing on as we make this slow shift toward our fall growing season.

Because September isn’t an eviction notice for the summer garden. 😂

And apparently my garden has decided to throw one more plot twist at me: six baby melons. 🍈 After losing my spring melons, I am watching these little things VERY closely.

August brings a welcome shift for Las Vegas vegetable gardens as the hottest days slowly begin giving way to cooler nights. That's when many favorite crops get the chance to establish strong growth and settle in for a productive fall season.

Stay tuned. Tomorrow I’ll be sharing my September video on what to plant and do in your High Desert garden.

Apparently, “peppers love heat” comes with a little desert asterisk. 🌶️☀️

My pepper plants didn’t just struggle to produce this summer. They barely flowered at all.

So I started looking into why.

Extreme heat is part of the story, but watering, nutrition, plant stress, maturity and overall health can all play a role. And instead of throwing fertilizer at the problem and hoping for the best, I’m learning to look at what the plants are actually telling me first.

Meanwhile, my fall seedlings are growing, and garden space is about to become very valuable. 👀🌱

That’s gardening in the high desert. Sometimes the advice isn’t wrong. It just needs a Las Vegas asterisk.

If you enjoy learning the why behind what happens in the garden, come garden with me on Curious Greens on YouTube. 🌿

And tell me: how are your peppers doing this summer?

The garden is starting to change.

We are still dealing with triple digit, desert heat, but the days are getting shorter, the nights are beginning to shift, and I’m seeing little signs that the garden knows another season is coming.

Some plants are waking back up. Some are still hanging on. Some have absolutely had enough of Las Vegas summer. 😂 and behind the scenes, my fall garden is already growing.

Come walk the garden with me for a late August tour. I’m sharing what’s thriving, what struggled, what surprised me, and what I’m getting ready to change as we move toward our fall growing season.

This is what gardening in the Mojave desert really looks like. Not a perfect garden. A garden responding to its environment, one season at a time. 🌱

If you garden in a hot climate, tell me what your garden looks like right now. Are you still in summer mode, or are you starting to see signs of all too?
