Remember this little plant I was fighting to save? 😂🌱

Well… today was the day I finally had to ask the concrete expert.

Cleanup day is underway at Caireen’s Boulder City, Nevada pool project, and while Luis and the crew were working on the rough grade, I had ONE question:

Can we build the new concrete curb and still keep my plant?

I already knew what I wanted the answer to be. 😂

Whether that actually works in construction is another story…

Luckily, even when the answer isn’t exactly what I hoped for, there is usually a design solution.

That’s one of my favorite parts of being involved in the entire process. Once construction starts, you see the space differently. Conditions change, ideas evolve, and sometimes the best design solution comes from solving a problem right there on site.

Caireen’s Boulder City backyard is coming together, one decision at a time. 💖

The goal isn’t just to build a pool.

It’s to create a backyard that works beautifully, functions well, and feels like it was designed specifically for the people and pups who live there.

I wasn’t planning on crying on camera today. 🥹

Then Caireen’s neighbor came over.

He told me he sees me here all the time. He told me what a great job I’m doing. He told me he knows I rebuilt the front yard.

Then he said something that completely broke me.

He told me that Caireen’s dad, Mike, who built so much of this property before he passed away, would be incredibly proud of what we’re doing here.

That got me.

Because this isn’t just a backyard.

Caireen lost both of her parents, and for a while she wasn’t even sure what she wanted to do with this house or this property. I told her from the beginning that this place is beautiful. That it’s worth keeping. That she should make it hers.

She’s been doing exactly that.

Caireen is a swimmer. A diver. A true water baby. 💦 Her happiness is in the water. She swims twice a day and will literally drive to the Boulder City pool just to swim when she can.

Building this pool and transforming this property isn’t a little project.

It’s huge.

It’s taking something her parents created, honoring what was here, and helping Caireen create something that belongs to her.

Honestly, it feels a little like building a house in the ground.

I’m incredibly honored that she trusted me with something this meaningful.

I’m proud of this project.

I’m proud of Caireen.

I’m proud of what we’re creating here.

Today just reminded me that sometimes the work we do goes way beyond landscaping, pools, concrete and plants.

Sometimes we get to help someone write the next chapter. ❤️

And yeah… apparently sometimes I cry about it on Instagram.

👀 DID YOU KNOW THIS LITTLE DETAIL IS BUILT INTO THE POOL FOR SAFETY?

It’s shotcrete day over here at Caireen’s, and while the pool shell is taking shape, I wanted to show you one of those little details you might never notice once the pool is finished.

That little built-in handhold 👋🏼

When you have a raised bond beam, raised spa, or another elevated section, you can’t always reach the top edge of the pool from the water.

This gives swimmers something secure to grab onto for added support along those raised areas.

It’s one of those details that may not look like much during construction, but thoughtful pool design is all about thinking through how people will actually use the space.

Pretty AND practical. That’s the goal. 💦

See those kids swimming in the background? That was also March in Las Vegas. 👀

That’s exactly why good pool design is about so much more than choosing a pretty finish and some new tile.

Kevin originally wanted to update the look of his pool. I saw a bigger and more functional solution.

The equipment was taking up valuable space in a small backyard, there was no pool heater, and his wife (Nesryn 💖) had already made it pretty clear that she wasn’t getting into that cold-ass pool. 😂

We moved the equipment, created more usable space, added a heater, and gave the pool a complete aesthetic update with a new pebble finish, tile, and gorgeous travertine bullnose coping💫

Then, just a few weeks (the minimum 30 days to be exact 🤣) after the new finish was installed, there they were…

Kids swimming in March.

In Las Vegas, that takes a heater. 🔥

That’s the part of design I care about.

I want to think about the things my clients aren’t thinking about yet.

How will you actually use this space?
What is wasting valuable room?
What will make you use the pool more?
What will make the backyard function better?
What can we solve now instead of wishing we had addressed it later?

I’m not interested in simply getting you to sign a contract and selling you a pool.

I want to design a backyard that works for your actual life.

Turning a footing into a water feature. 👀

What started as an existing footing behind Caireen’s raised wall became an opportunity to take the design somewhere completely different.

This wall is becoming a full architectural feature with water, a raised planter for Desert Steel plants, and intentional shadow play across the wall behind it.

Sometimes you don’t need to hide the weird stuff.

You make it a design feature💫

Every time I’m in a new city, I STALK Frank Lloyd’s houses, because he is the REASON I got into architecture.🤩

This is his iconic circular sun house, built into the slope of a mountain… I HAD to go experience it for myself, I even took a little puff puff at the bottom underside of this magical building, I know Frank would have loved me 😋 Frank Lloyd Wright was a LADIES MAN 😍

This is the stuff you DON’T see when you look at a finished pool. 👀

Before the tile, before the water, before the pretty finishes, there’s a whole lot of plumbing happening underground.

Caireen’s Boulder City pool is coming together, and I’m showing you some of the details happening behind the scenes.

First up, this channel drain in the deep end. I LOVE this one. It gives us a clean, functional way to manage drainage while keeping the design streamlined.

Then we have the spa plumbing… 12 jets. TWELVE. 😂

This is going to be a seriously functional pool, and these are the details that make a difference long after the project is finished.

We’re catching you up on the construction progress because we’re actually much farther along now. Plumbing is in, and next up is rebar, the steel reinforcement that creates the structural cage inside the pool before the shotcrete goes in.

And just when I was getting into the plumbing…

Max decided it was time to inspect the job site. 😂🐾

Okay, Caireen… hear me out. 😂🌿

I came to this backyard to check on the project and apparently decided I needed to inspect, investigate, obsess over, and emotionally attach myself to EVERYTHING. 😂

The plants.

The pool equipment.

The front yard.

The pavers.

Basically… I was having a moment. 😂

We’re getting ready to completely transform this backyard, and there are only a handful of existing plants we’re trying to save.

This one?

𝗜 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗬 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗶𝘁. 😂

I’m pretty sure this is 𝘋𝘢𝘴𝘺𝘭𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘮𝘶𝘮, and I just love the way it looks in this space. It has that architectural, sculptural quality that I think could be really cool once the new landscape comes together.

I’m already picturing what I can do with the lighting at night. Those fine leaves could cast the coolest shadows across that planter wall. 👀✨ I can already see it!

Caireen also wants to save a couple of bottle trees up on the planter and a few grasses in the yard, so I’ve had Flaco install temporary irrigation to help keep the plants she wants to save alive while we’re going through construction.

Especially in this Las Vegas heat, I don’t want the plants we’re trying to save depending on someone remembering to hand-water them every day.

Now I need YOUR opinion…
