For decades, Norm has dedicated his career to designing, building, and maintaining landscapes that work with our desert, not against it.

At a recent Clark County Commission Board meeting, he spoke from the heart about the growing use of artificial turf and why this issue matters so deeply to him. His remarks reflect years of experience, passion, and a lifelong commitment to the future of Southern Nevada’s landscapes.

As you watch, it’s worth noting that this conversation is often misunderstood. This isn’t about choosing between artificial turf and water-intensive grass lawns. Those aren’t the only two options. There is a wide range of drought-tolerant, water-wise landscape solutions that conserve water while creating beautiful, functional outdoor spaces.

We’d love to hear your thoughts. Where do you see the future of landscaping in Southern Nevada?

“It’s funny what a little perspective can provide. In May, we’re horrified at that first 100° day. By August, we’re positively thrilled that it’s “only going to hit a hundred!” Heck, that’s jacket weather after we’ve endured a few weeks of 110° days and 90° nights, right?

Fortunately, most of us have air conditioning, shade and water anytime the heat starts to take its toll. Unfortunately for many of our plants, they have access to none of those things. They’re stuck out there in the blazing sun planted in rock and up against hot block walls that reflect the heat back on them for hours at a stretch. Their systems are forced to go into overdrive just to stay alive when temperatures soar and don’t let up, even at night.” There are a few simple ways to help them beat the heat, and one common landscaping choice could actually be making things worse.

Desert Bluebells (Phacelia campanularia) are a true springtime treasure, producing vivid blue-violet, bell-shaped flowers that create an unforgettable display.

Beyond their beauty, these native wildflowers are a valuable nectar source, often buzzing with native bees and butterflies throughout the season.

Their low-growing habit makes them an excellent choice for rock gardens, pathways, and the spaces between pavers, where they soften the landscape with effortless color.

Plant from fall through early spring to enjoy a spectacular bloom when temperatures are just right.

These are some of Norm’s favorite annuals that he has in his front yard. Have you tried growing Phacelia campanularia?

🌵 Healthy landscapes begin below the surface.

While irrigation is essential for a thriving garden, the wrong watering habits can quietly damage even well-established plants.

Some species are especially sensitive to moisture around their trunk or crown and require careful irrigation practices to thrive.
