View from the office. 🌴

This is exactly what we mean when we talk about Fine Gardening for waterfront properties.
The landscape doesn’t need to compete with the view.

It should frame it.

Layered planting, thoughtful scale, clean transitions and just enough restraint to let the setting do what it already does beautifully.

Sometimes good design knows when to be quiet.

After the rain, everything may look beautifully green.

A Fine Gardener looks a little closer.

After the amount of rain we’ve had recently, we’re paying attention to:

🌧️ Where water is lingering
🌿 How quickly beds are draining
🍃 Leaf spotting or stress
💧 Whether irrigation should still be running
🌱 How turf and plant roots are responding

Heavy rain doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong.

But it often reveals the places in a landscape that deserve another look.

Fine Gardening notices what the weather leaves behind.

Sometimes the answer isn’t “spray it again.”

Southern chinch bugs have a documented history of developing resistance to insecticides used in Florida turf.

That does not mean every chinch bug population is resistant.

It does mean that when a treatment that once performed well stops producing the expected result, the responsible next step is to look more closely.

Was the pest correctly identified?

How did it respond?

What chemistry has been used previously?

Is the turf already stressed?

Are irrigation, mowing or fertility contributing to the problem?

Plant health care is a strategy — not a bottle.

The product isn’t the program. The thinking behind it is.

A lawn can change quickly — and sometimes the first clue is easy to miss.

Tropical sod webworms feed on the grass blade itself, often leaving turf looking ragged, thin or uneven before the problem becomes obvious.

A few things a Fine Gardener looks for:

🌿 Chewed or ragged grass blades
🌿 Areas that suddenly begin thinning
🌿 Small moths fluttering low over the lawn, especially toward dusk
🌿 Signs that the turf is already under stress

But here’s the important part:

Not every brown patch is a sod webworm problem.

Good plant health care starts with identifying what is actually happening before choosing a treatment.

Our newest Garden Note takes a closer look at sod webworms, what their damage can look like, and how proactive care helps protect Florida turf.

Look closely. Diagnose thoughtfully. Then treat what’s actually there.

A reminder as we move into October:

The rain may have returned at times, but our regional water restrictions have not gone away.

SWFWMD’s Modified Phase III “Extreme “ Water Shortage remains in effect through March 31, 2027, continuing one – day – per – week landscape irrigation across the affected region.

You’re exact watering day and permitted hours depend on your water provider and local municipality, so always check your city or county schedule first.

For us, thoughtful irrigation means more than simply running a controller.

It means watching the weather, understanding the property, adjusting, seasonally, and making every permitted watering cycle count.

Water wisely. Garden thoughtfully.

Weekend in inspiration.

A beautiful container doesn’t need dozens of different plants to feel abundant.

This combination works because three elements are doing different jobs:

Color draws the eye.
Texture creates depth.
Trailing movements softens the container and connects it to the surrounding space.

Place didn’t entrance, details like these become part of the welcome.

Sometimes a thoughtful container refresh is all a familiar space needs to feel completely renewed.

Beautiful gardens begin with the threshold.

A well – pruned garden shouldn’t necessarily look as though someone just “cut everything back.”

It should look considered.

Along this fence line, the goal was not simply to make the plant material smaller.

The work restored clearance, opened the structure, improved light and allowed the architecture of the fence to become part of the composition again – while preserving the screening and function of the planting.

This is this distinction between trimming and thoughtful pruning.

The best pruning leaves the garden looking like itself – only more intentional.

We’ve been waiting to share this one. 💗🦩

Salt & Soil Garden Co. is officially featured in the October issue of Lawn & Landscape Magazine after being named the first-place winner of their first-ever Uniform Contest.

And somehow, our little pink-shirt idea earned 130 votes.

When Salt & Soil began, we knew we wanted the company to feel different. We wanted a brand that felt like Florida, felt like us, and was instantly recognizable.

So we chose pink.

We chose a flamingo.

And thankfully, our team said, “Let’s do it.”

Seeing them featured in the magazine is the best part of all of this.

A huge thank-you to Michael Tomaino for putting the Salt & Soil Garden Co. journey in motion.

We’re also so grateful to Landscape Leadership for helping create the brand and making sure we knew about the contest, and to Cintas, Amplex Wholesale Nursery, Golden Rain Nursery, Millennium Services of Tampa Bay, INC., SiteOne Landscape Supply, Bulldog Equipment, and all of the vendors and partners who continue to support us.

Most of all, thank you to our team for rocking the pink every single day.

First place. 130 votes. One incredible crew.

We’re pretty proud of this one. 💗

Heavy rain doesn’t just change the day’s schedule — it can reveal quite a bit about what’s happening in a landscape. 🌿

Standing water, saturated root zones, soil compaction and prolonged leaf moisture are all things our team watches closely after extended periods of rain. It’s also a good reminder that irrigation should respond to what Mother Nature is already providing — not simply continue running on the usual schedule.

Great information from our friends at Amplex Wholesale Nursery and a reminder of why thoughtful garden care is about noticing the details.

A healthy landscape is often telling you exactly what it needs — if you know what to look for.

🌧️ 5 Things Landscapers Should Watch After Heavy Rain
Florida rain can do more than slow down a jobsite. Here are five things worth keeping an eye on when the ground stays wet:

1. Waterlogged roots
Roots need oxygen too. When soil remains saturated, water fills the pore spaces that normally contain air, creating low-oxygen conditions that can stress plants.

2. Compacted soil
Be careful with equipment and foot traffic when soils are very wet. Working or driving over saturated soil can contribute to compaction, limiting water infiltration and root growth.

3. Standing water
Ponding after heavy rain can be a sign of low soil infiltration or soil compaction. Heavy rainfall can reveal drainage and soil problems that may not be obvious when the jobsite is dry.

4. Irrigation schedules
Don’t assume rain did the job. Check newly planted root balls to make sure they received enough water, and adjust irrigation schedules to avoid overwatering during rainy periods.

5. Increased disease pressure
Extended periods of moisture and leaf wetness can create favorable conditions for certain plant diseases. Keep an eye out for developing symptoms during prolonged rainy weather.

A rainy day can tell you a lot about a landscape, if you know what to look for. 🌿

From removal to preparation to fresh installation.

This waterfront sod renovation is a good example of why the finish lawn is only part of the story.

Before new turf goes down, the existing material has to be removed, the site evaluated and prepared, grades and edges considered, and the installation carefully worked around the existing landscape.

Then comes the transformation.

Fresh sod gives the property in immediate visual reset – but thoughtful preparation is what gives that new lawn its foundation.

From prep to fresh finish.
