Not every day at the lagoon is about crystal-clear water and beautiful views. Sometimes it's about getting your hands dirty and taking care of the equipment that keeps everything running.
Today's focus: Preventative Maintenance! 🛠️
These aluminum camlock fittings and elbows take a beating from constant use, moisture, sand, and exposure to the elements. Over time, oxidation and buildup can affect connections, seals, and overall equipment performance.
Rather than waiting for something to fail, I've been working on cleaning, inspecting, and maintaining our equipment to help extend its service life.
✅ Removing surface oxidation and buildup
✅ Inspecting fittings and locking mechanisms
✅ Checking for wear and potential connection issues
✅ Helping preserve equipment through routine maintenance
One thing I've learned throughout my years in aquatic operations is that the little things you maintain today can prevent the expensive problems of tomorrow.

Early morning water-feature check 💧
Yesterday this fountain basin had developed an odor and the water chemistry was well outside the range I wanted to see. After testing, I brushed the basin, addressed the sanitation, and let the system circulate overnight.
This morning at 7:27 AM, circulation is strong and the fountain is looking noticeably better. There’s still some cloudiness to work through, so the next step is another full chemistry check and letting the numbers—not just appearance—determine what gets adjusted next.

Another week in the field and another reminder that good aquatic operations go far beyond checking chlorine and pH.

This week involved equipment inspections, identifying worn and damaged vacuum components, replacing hardware, evaluating suction performance, monitoring circulation and water movement, reviewing preventative-maintenance needs, troubleshooting chemical-delivery concerns, and looking for ways to reduce unnecessary labor through better tools and procedures.

A lot of the work I enjoy most happens before something becomes an emergency: noticing corrosion, loose hardware, cracked components, declining performance, unusual flow, or equipment that simply isn't operating the way it should.

Every facility teaches you something different, and I continue bringing those lessons back to JNJ AquaWisePool & Leak Solutions.

Some days in aquatics are less about cleaning water and more about figuring out why the system isn’t behaving the way it should.

Today was one of those troubleshooting days.

We started with a chlorine reading around 1 ppm, after consistently seeing closer to 4 ppm earlier in the week. With the lagoon also taking on several hours of fill water, dilution immediately became part of the equation—but you still have to verify the chemical delivery side instead of assuming dilution is the only cause.

That meant looking deeper at the system:

• Comparing chemistry from previous days
• Accounting for the volume of fresh fill water being added
• Looking at the chemical delivery zones and identifying where each line feeds
• Planning to physically trace the chemical lines from the pump room/CDS system out toward the bunker and individual zones
• Watching for possible construction impacts, especially where heavy stone has recently been placed close to areas where chemical lines may be routed
• Checking whether a zone is actually receiving chemical instead of simply assuming the feeder is operating because the equipment is running
• Continuing to monitor calcium hardness after the added fill water and preparing to correct it with calcium chloride as needed

This is the side of aquatic operations that I enjoy most.

A low reading is just the symptom. The real job is finding the reason behind it—chemistry, dilution, delivery, circulation, equipment, infrastructure, or sometimes a combination of all of them.

Troubleshoot. Verify. Document. Correct.

That’s how you learn a system from the surface all the way down.

💧 UNDER THE SURFACE — COMMERCIAL LINER INSPECTION
Working around a body of water this size changes the way you look at preventative maintenance.
During a recent inspection, I documented several areas of the liner that deserved a closer look—including raised/wrinkled sections, seam transitions, perimeter areas, and localized discoloration around areas of movement.
On a large commercial liner system, the goal isn’t to automatically assume every irregularity is a leak. It’s to establish a baseline, document what’s there, monitor whether it changes, and determine which areas warrant further testing.
That means looking beyond just the water level:
🔍 Liner seams and transitions
💧 Potential leak indicators
📏 Wrinkles, movement and raised areas
📸 Photo/video documentation
📝 Baseline condition tracking
🔧 Preventative-maintenance observations
The wide shot really puts the scale into perspective—small details can be easy to overlook when you’re dealing with millions of gallons of water and acres of liner.
This is the side of aquatic maintenance I enjoy most: finding the small things before they have a chance to become big things.

You’re managing a 5.74-million-gallon recreational lagoon on a hot Florida afternoon.

Current readings:

• Free Chlorine: 2.1 ppm
• Target Free Chlorine: 3.0 ppm
• pH: 7.5
• Water Temp: 87°F
• Heavy afternoon UV exposure ☀️
• Approximately 1,200 guests expected through the facility
• A thunderstorm just dropped 0.6 inches of rain
• Several hours of peak bather load are still ahead

The lagoon is currently within operating range, but you're expecting chlorine demand to increase.

🤔 QUESTION FOR THE POOL PROS:

If you wanted to raise the free chlorine from 2.1 ppm to 3.0 ppm, approximately how much available chlorine would that require before accounting for the continued demand from UV, bathers, rainwater and organics?

🐝 Why Are Bees Hanging Around Your Pool? 💦

Ever notice bumblebees or honey bees stopping by your pool for a drink?

They're not necessarily after you — they're after the water and minerals.

Bees need water during hot weather, and honey bees in particular can be attracted to water containing salt and other minerals. That can make swimming pools — especially saltwater pools — a pretty appealing watering hole.

Unfortunately, a pool isn't exactly designed for tiny visitors. Bees can struggle to get back out once they hit the water.

🌼 Try a Bee Bowl instead!

Set up a shallow bowl or saucer away from the main swimming area and add:

🐝 Fresh water
🪨 Pebbles, stones, or marbles that stick above the water
☀️ A sunny location where bees can easily find it

The stones give them somewhere safe to land while they drink without falling into deeper water.

For an established bee problem around a salt pool, a very lightly salted alternative water source may be even more attractive. Extension guidance suggests roughly 1–2 teaspoons of non-iodized edible salt per gallon of water.

One important trick: don't let the bowl run dry. Once bees learn where a reliable water source is, you want them returning to the bowl instead of rediscovering your pool.

🐝 Give the bees their own watering hole — and hopefully keep yours for the swimmers.

☣️ What Does Chlorine Gas Do to the Body?

Chlorine gas reacts with the moisture in your eyes, nose, throat, and lungs to form irritating acids. That's why exposure can become serious very quickly.

Mild exposure:
👁️ Burning, red, watery eyes
👃 Burning nose and throat
😷 Coughing and hoarseness
💧 Runny nose
😮‍💨 Mild shortness of breath

Moderate exposure:
⚠️ Severe coughing fits
⚠️ Chest tightness
⚠️ Wheezing
⚠️ Difficulty breathing
⚠️ Nausea and dizziness

Severe exposure:
🚨 Fluid can build up in the lungs (pulmonary edema), making it difficult to breathe. This is a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment.

The takeaway:
Never mix pool chemicals. Even common products like liquid chlorine and muriatic acid can create chlorine gas if they come into direct contact.

Professional pool care isn't just about keeping water blue—it's about understanding chemistry and preventing dangerous reactions before they happen.
