🧠 Pool logic

According to Florida's Best Pools – 2026 Green Pool & Automation Tech Report:

Β«"Automated pool chemical testing (ORP and pH sensor integration) has grown roughly 4Γ— since 2021 and now appears in 38% of U.S. residential pools."Β»

If this trend continues, smart pool technology will become as common as smart thermostats and security systems. Automated monitoring can help maintain more consistent water chemistry, but it's still important to verify readings and perform regular equipment inspections.

Technology is a great assistantβ€”but it doesn't replace experience.

🌍 What's That Hazy Sky? It's Saharan Dust.

If you've noticed hazy skies, colorful sunrises, or a thin layer of dust on your car, you're likely seeing the effects of the Saharan Air Layer (SAL)β€”a massive plume of dust that travels thousands of miles from the Sahara Desert across the Atlantic.

For pool owners, here's why it matters:

β€’ Fine dust can settle into your pool, increasing the amount of debris your filter has to catch.
β€’ You may notice your filter pressure rise a little faster than usual.
β€’ Dust adds a small amount of phosphates and other nutrients that can contribute to algae growth if chlorine levels aren't maintained.
β€’ Expect to skim more often and keep an eye on your water chemistry after a heavy dust event.

A little extra maintenance now can save a lot of work later.

🧠 Pool Nerd Tip: After a Saharan dust event, empty skimmer baskets, check your filter pressure, brush the pool, and test your sanitizer level. Your pool will thank you.

Today was a somber day. My first yearly account, I found homeowner unresponsive and had to call the sheriff and upon arrival, homeowner had passed away, I will miss my crazy German friend. Still cleaned his pool one last time .

πŸŽ™οΈ Pool Nerd: Let's Talk Turbidity

Most pool owners have never heard the word turbidity, but they've definitely seen it.

Turbidity is simply a measure of how many tiny particles are suspended in the water. The more particles floating around, the cloudier the pool looks.

Here's the interesting part:

A pool can have perfect chlorine.
A perfect pH.
Perfect alkalinity.

And still look cloudy.

Why?

Because chemistry kills contaminants, but filtration removes them.

Think of chlorine as the cleanup crew and your filter as the garbage truck. Killing algae is only half the battle. The dead algae, dust, pollen, oils, and microscopic debris still need to be removed from the water.

That's where filtration comes in.

A typical sand filter may capture particles around 20–40 microns. A cartridge filter can often capture particles around 10–20 microns. That's one reason two pools with identical chemistry can look completely different.

One pool is clean.

The other pool is clean and clear.

As an AFO, one of the biggest misconceptions I see is people trying to solve every cloudy-water problem with more chlorine. Sometimes the answer isn't another jug of shock.

Sometimes the answer is simply giving the filter time to do its job.

Because at the end of the day, clear water isn't just chemistry.

It's chemistry and filtration working together.

πŸ€“ Pool Nerd Fact: The human eye can begin noticing turbidity long before a standard test kit tells you something is wrong. Sometimes your pool is giving you clues before your water test does.

Under the Surface #2

A homeowner sees a slide.

An AFO sees load points, water depth requirements, anchoring systems, deck conditions, manufacturer specifications, and liability exposure.

Sometimes the difference between "looks fine" and "is safe" isn't obvious until someone trained to operate aquatic facilities takes a closer look.

That's why inspections matter.

06/20/2026

I was looking at a pool slide installation today off of a Facebook group today and as most people see a slide and ask, "Does it look right?"

An Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) looks at it differently.

We ask:
βœ” Is the water depth appropriate for the slide's design?
βœ” Is the entry angle within manufacturer specifications?
βœ” Is the structure properly supported?
βœ” Will it remain safe years from now, not just on installation day?

The same mindset applies to pool care.

A pool technician can clean a pool.

An AFO is trained to understand:
πŸ”Ή Hydraulics and circulation
πŸ”Ή Water chemistry and balance
πŸ”Ή Risk management and safety
πŸ”Ή Equipment operation and troubleshooting
πŸ”Ή Industry standards and manufacturer requirements

When I walk onto a property, I'm not just looking at today's water clarity. I'm looking at how the entire system works together and what problems may be developing beneath the surface.

That's the difference between maintaining a pool and managing an aquatic environment.

Pool Nerd Fact: The clearest pool isn't always the healthiest pool. Good water starts with understanding the system behind it. πŸ’§πŸ§

POOL NERD CASE FILE
Under the Surface: Fiberglass Pool Leak Investigation

Homeowner complaint:
Pool was losing water faster than normal, with the water level appearing to drop quicker when the system was running.
On the surface, everything can look like a normal pool issue. But when a pool is losing that much water, the goal is not to guess β€” it is to separate symptoms from evidence.
During the diagnostic process, I checked multiple possible leak points, including:
πŸ” Return fittings
πŸ” Skimmer area
πŸ” Light niche
πŸ” Coping/deck areas
πŸ” Audible leak signals around fittings
πŸ” Water movement behavior with the system on and off
The strongest findings were around several return fittings and the skimmer area. Some returns showed noticeable sound changes during audio testing, and small hairline cracks were observed around interior return areas. There was also separation visible around portions of the coping/deck edge, which can sometimes point toward movement, settling, or washout concerns around the pool structure.
The important part:
A leak diagnosis is not just about finding β€œa wet spot.”
It is about understanding how water loss, equipment operation, fittings, shell movement, and surrounding soil conditions may all connect.
Recommendation:
This pool needs targeted repair attention at the suspect fittings/gasket areas, continued water-level monitoring, and contractor evaluation for any permanent shell or structural-related repair. A temporary seal may help slow the loss, but permanent repairs should be handled properly so the same problem does not keep coming back.
Pool Nerd takeaway:
Clear water does not always mean a healthy pool.
Sometimes the real story is under the surface.
