🐝 Why Are Bees Hanging Around Your Pool? 💦

Ever notice bumblebees or honey bees stopping by your pool for a drink?

They're not necessarily after you — they're after the water and minerals.

Bees need water during hot weather, and honey bees in particular can be attracted to water containing salt and other minerals. That can make swimming pools — especially saltwater pools — a pretty appealing watering hole.

Unfortunately, a pool isn't exactly designed for tiny visitors. Bees can struggle to get back out once they hit the water.

🌼 Try a Bee Bowl instead!

Set up a shallow bowl or saucer away from the main swimming area and add:

🐝 Fresh water
🪨 Pebbles, stones, or marbles that stick above the water
☀️ A sunny location where bees can easily find it

The stones give them somewhere safe to land while they drink without falling into deeper water.

For an established bee problem around a salt pool, a very lightly salted alternative water source may be even more attractive. Extension guidance suggests roughly 1–2 teaspoons of non-iodized edible salt per gallon of water.

One important trick: don't let the bowl run dry. Once bees learn where a reliable water source is, you want them returning to the bowl instead of rediscovering your pool.

☣️ What Does Chlorine Gas Do to the Body?

Chlorine gas reacts with the moisture in your eyes, nose, throat, and lungs to form irritating acids. That's why exposure can become serious very quickly.

Mild exposure:
👁️ Burning, red, watery eyes
👃 Burning nose and throat
😷 Coughing and hoarseness
💧 Runny nose
😮‍💨 Mild shortness of breath

Moderate exposure:
⚠️ Severe coughing fits
⚠️ Chest tightness
⚠️ Wheezing
⚠️ Difficulty breathing
⚠️ Nausea and dizziness

Severe exposure:
🚨 Fluid can build up in the lungs (pulmonary edema), making it difficult to breathe. This is a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment.

The takeaway:
Never mix pool chemicals. Even common products like liquid chlorine and muriatic acid can create chlorine gas if they come into direct contact.

🌍 What's That Hazy Sky? It's Saharan Dust.

If you've noticed hazy skies, colorful sunrises, or a thin layer of dust on your car, you're likely seeing the effects of the Saharan Air Layer (SAL)—a massive plume of dust that travels thousands of miles from the Sahara Desert across the Atlantic.

For pool owners, here's why it matters:

• Fine dust can settle into your pool, increasing the amount of debris your filter has to catch.
• You may notice your filter pressure rise a little faster than usual.
• Dust adds a small amount of phosphates and other nutrients that can contribute to algae growth if chlorine levels aren't maintained.
• Expect to skim more often and keep an eye on your water chemistry after a heavy dust event.

A little extra maintenance now can save a lot of work later.
