Just a peek at how I’m freezing all of these Aronia berries!

Once they’re rinsed and dried, I bag them up, vacuum seal them, and into the freezer they go. It’s a really simple way to preserve a big harvest and gives you plenty of options for what to do with them later.

My biggest plan for this year’s harvest is to dehydrate the berries in small batches and turn them into Aronia Berry Powder to offer for sale. It’s a super-concentrated way to add all those antioxidants to smoothies, yogurt, oatmeal, or even just mix some into water.

I’m also planning to turn some of the harvest into Aronia Syrup, so be on the lookout for both Aronia Berry Powder and Syrup coming soon!

Making some progress on our Aronia harvest! We’re not quite halfway done and already at 70 lbs! My best guess is we’ll end up with around 220 lbs total this year.

I’m freezing everything for now, but I’m planning on turning a good amount into Aronia Berry Powder, along with making some Aronia Berry Syrup.

So... be on the lookout for Aronia Berry Powder & Syrup in the near future!

🎉 Well... we finally did it!

After a lot of work behind the scenes, we've officially relaunched our website, and for the first time ever you can now pre-order our bare-root berry bushes online for fall and spring planting!

Even better, we're now offering nationwide shipping, so people all across the contiguous United States can finally order plants from us.

If you're local, don't worry—you can simply choose Local Pickup during checkout so there's no shipping charge.

Going forward, bare-root plants are going to be the heart of Fruitful Landscapes. I truly believe they're the best way to establish healthy, productive berry bushes, and they allow us to grow stronger plants in a more sustainable way.

Rather than trying to offer the biggest variety, my goal is to focus on the berry bushes that I genuinely believe are among the best for producing meaningful amounts of fruit at home.

Since we're now shipping nationwide, these plants are available to a much larger audience than ever before. If you've been thinking about ordering for fall, I wouldn't wait too long—once a variety sells out, we'll have to wait until the next digging season before it's available again.

This is such a cool plant... Spotted Bee Balm!

It attracts all kinds of pollinators, including these beautiful blue-winged wasps. They help control Japanese beetles by laying their eggs on the grubs in the soil, making them a great insect to have around the garden.

Spotted bee balm is also considered one of the most medicinal of all the bee balms. The leaves are especially rich in thymol, and if you've ever chewed one, there's no mistaking it!

I've always loved the taste and smell of rosemary, but I've really come to appreciate it over the last year. Last winter was the first time I successfully overwintered it indoors, and the biggest key was simply giving it supplemental light. With how efficient LED grow lights have become, it's easier than ever to enjoy fresh rosemary all year long.

I've got some beautiful rosemary plants available right now that are perfect for overwintering indoors. The 1/2-gallon pots are $10 each, and I also have a handful of larger plants in nice 2-gallon pots for $15. A few of the smaller ones are trailing rosemary, which has a really neat growth habit.

I was just thinking about how the way we value things is interesting.

Take an aronia berry for example. If you hand one to someone and they’re expecting it to taste like a blueberry, they’ll probably be disappointed. It’s more tart, more complex, and definitely an acquired taste.

But something changes when you understand what you’re eating. When you learn that aronia is one of the most antioxidant-rich berries in the world, that it's being studied for its potential health benefits, and that it’s nourishing your body in ways most fruits can’t, you begin to appreciate it differently. The flavor hasn’t changed, but your perspective has. Over time, you may even grow to genuinely enjoy the taste.

Maybe that's a reminder that some of the best things in life aren't always the sweetest at first.

Sometimes they're the things that ask a little more of us before they reveal their value. And once we understand what they have to offer, we don't just tolerate them, we learn to truly appreciate them.

Well... the robins discovered our Viking Aronia berries this year!

We've never really had this happen before with the aronias. I think it's because we've attracted so many birds with all the other berries we're growing. I guess word got out that the aronias are pretty tasty too!. 😄
