A look at the progress made at Crawford County High School and Middle School’s new Tornado Shelter and saferoom. Steel reinforced CMU walls finished at the start of the year as the structural steel team moved in to set up the steel columns, deck support and steel decking. Crews finished pouring the near 16,000sqft of concrete for the new floor as well as a concrete roof before roofing crews insulated and sealed the roof with a waterproof membrane. It has been a busy summer as the teams worked diligently to finish interior renovations of existing classrooms and hallways the that will lead into the new spaces. With interior walls completed and painting beginning it will be all hands-on deck as we push for the finish line. We look forward to the completion and opening of the space this fall.

New Albany High School gym Renovation is moving along. The auxiliary gym is substantially complete. The main gym new wood floor is installed and sanding is starting. The old bleachers are demolished and the new ones will be installed in coming weeks. It's wild to see how wide the gym is with the old bleachers out. Still on track to start basketball season. Shireman is serving as the construction manager.

We were proud to attend the ribbon cutting at Redwire last week. It capped a multi-year development journey with Techshot, Redwire and Floyd County. The building was a READI project funded by Floyd County at Novaparke. Shireman served as the BOT developer and construction manager. Redwire and IU Southeast share the facility. Redwire does micro and zero gravity science experiments from the facility using astronauts on the International Space Station. One of their recent projects is working towards printing human organs in space. The building features high tech communications center to talk directly to space, modern high tech labs, and office space for over 40 engineers. Out front is a custom Indiana limestone astronaut. The IU Southeast side has wet and flex lab space, meeting space and co-working collaboration areas. Thanks to our many partners at Floyd County government and Floyd County Redevelopment, Redwire, IUS, architect Tower Pinkster, AML and the rest of our local subcontractor team.

Big step completed today as the mechanical units were lifted on the gym at New Albany High School via helicopter. The lifts were too far for a traditional crane requiring the air lift. 20 lifts were completed successfully today. The gym project - new HVAC, bleachers, wood floor and more - remains on track to finish ahead of basketball season. Shireman is serving as construction manager.

Not every day you get to help build a facility that’s helping shape the future of space medical research. Proud to have been part of this unique project in Georgetown, Indiana. We can’t wait to see the innovations that come out of this building.

A lot of older K-12 schools have little used courtyards that were a staple of older design. At Crawford County High School this former courtyard was basically dead space near the main gym.

Now it is being repurposed as part of a FEMA grant to be a tornado shelter for the school and community, designed to be capable of withstanding a F4 direct hit. Through the grant FEMA covers 75% of the construction cost and 25% is provided by the school.

This shelter will be especially appreciated by a community that was hit by an F3 tornado in 2004, damaging approximately 80% of the homes in Marengo.

While it will be used as a shelter during storms, during better times the school will be able to use the space for a much needed multipurpose/band room and a modern weight room.

Construction wise, the challenge of building in this courtyard is that we have to access a space totally surrounded by existing, active buildings. The solution was to demolish a hole through a former weight room and classroom as you can see in the beginning of the video.

Concrete foundations are now complete, and the heavily reinforced masonry walls are rising. The steel will begin to be stood up in late February.

The project is on track for a late 2026 completion.
