Asphalt 101: Fatigue Cracking 🛣️

Ever notice cracks in asphalt that look like alligator skin? 🐊 That’s called fatigue cracking (or alligator cracking), and it’s a sign the pavement is under stress.

This type of cracking happens when asphalt can’t keep up with repeated traffic loads. It usually starts from the bottom of the pavement and works its way up, often caused by thin asphalt, weak support underneath, or poor drainage. Catching it early is key—repairs can range from simple surface treatments to full-depth reconstruction, depending on the severity.

Common Causes Include:

- Repeated traffic loading: Heavy vehicles put stress on the pavement over time.

- Weak foundation or subgrade: The layers beneath the asphalt aren’t providing enough support.

- Thin pavement design: Asphalt that isn’t thick enough for the traffic it carries.

- Poor drainage: Water weakens the pavement structure below.

- Aging asphalt: As asphalt gets older, it becomes brittle and less flexible.

Understanding the cause helps determine the right fix—and can save time and money down the road! 🚧

Asphalt 101: Milling vs Millings
Ever wonder what happens when asphalt gets worn down but doesn’t need a full rebuild?

Asphalt milling (aka cold planing) removes the top damaged layer of pavement using a machine with rotating cutters. This creates a textured surface that’s perfect for resurfacing or leveling—without tearing everything out.

✔️ Fixes cracks, potholes, and ruts
✔️ Preserves drainage & road height
✔️ Cost-effective and eco-friendly
✔️ Old asphalt gets recycled ♻️

What about asphalt millings?
Millings are crushed, recycled asphalt that can be reused for driveways, paths, and base layers. They spread like gravel but compact into a hard, stable surface thanks to the residual oils in the asphalt. When graded and rolled properly, they create a durable, low-maintenance alternative to new asphalt or traditional gravel.

💡 Sustainable. Practical. Proven.

Asphalt 101: Replacement

Asphalt driveway replacement means removing the old asphalt—and often the base beneath it—and installing a completely new driveway. This is the best solution when there’s severe damage, such as deep potholes, widespread cracking, or an unstable base.

Unlike resurfacing, replacement rebuilds the driveway from the ground up, giving you a stronger foundation, better performance, and long-lasting results.

If your driveway has major issues, replacement is the way to start fresh and do it right.

Asphalt 101: What Is an Overlay?

An asphalt overlay or resurface is a budget-friendly way to give your pavement a fresh start. We apply a new layer of asphalt (about 1.5–2 inches) right over the existing pavement that’s still structurally sound.

It helps seal small cracks, smooth out the surface, and extend the life of your asphalt—without the time or cost of a full tear-out.

✔ Great for pavement with moderate wear
✖ Not ideal for extreme cracking or base failures (those typically need a more robust repair)

Why customers love overlays:
• Faster turnaround
• Lower cost
• Less waste

Have questions about whether an overlay is right for your pavement? We’re happy to help.

Asphalt 101: What Is Sealcoating?

Sealcoating is a protective layer applied to asphalt to help prevent damage before problems start.

What it protects against:
• Water pe*******on
• UV damage from the sun
• Oil and chemical stains
• Everyday traffic wear

Sealcoating helps:
✔ Extend the life of your pavement
✔ Prevent cracks and oxidation
✔ Keep asphalt looking black and durable

Important to know:
New asphalt must cure for at least 6–12 months before sealcoating – we recommend waiting as long as possible and never too often. Once every 2 to 3 years depending on the use. Once cured, sealcoating is one of the most cost-effective ways to protect your investment.
