Why It’s Important to Balance Your Pool Water Before Closing for the Season

As the kids get ready to head back to school, it’s tempting to put the cover on your pool and call it a season. However, WHEN you close your pool is just as important as HOW you close it.

Closing your pool too early or with unbalanced water can lead to algae growth, staining, equipment damage, and a much more difficult (and expensive) pool opening in the spring.

Why Water Balance Matters Before Closing

Taking the time to properly balance your pool water before closing helps protect your investment all winter long.

Protects Your Pool Surface

Water that is too acidic or too alkaline can damage pool surfaces during the winter months. Properly balanced water helps prevent staining, scaling, etching, and discoloration on vinyl liners, and fiberglass pools.

Protects Your Equipment

Corrosive or improperly balanced water can damage pumps, heaters, salt systems, ladders, handrails, lights, and other metal components. Balanced water helps extend the life of your equipment.

Helps Prevent Algae Growth

Algae spores are always present in pool water. Proper water chemistry, combined with quality winterizing chemicals, helps prevent algae from taking over while your pool is closed.

Makes Spring Opening Easier

Pools that are closed correctly typically open with clearer water, require fewer chemicals, and take much less time to get swim-ready.

Saves You Money

Preventing algae blooms, staining, corrosion, and scale buildup means fewer repairs, less labor, and lower chemical costs when opening your pool next season.

Why You Shouldn’t Close Your Pool Too Early

One of the biggest mistakes pool owners make is closing their pool while the weather is still warm.

When water temperatures remain above 60°F (15.5°C), algae and bacteria continue to grow—even with the cover on. Warm water combined with limited circulation creates the perfect environment for algae blooms.

Closing too early can result in:

* Green, algae-filled water in the spring
* Heavy staining on pool surfaces
* Increased chemical use when reopening
* Longer cleanup times
* More wear on pool equipment and filters
* Higher opening costs

Although it may seem convenient to close your pool in early September, waiting just a few more weeks can make a significant difference.

When Should You Close Your Pool?

For most pools in Ohio and similar climates, the best time to close your pool is when:

* Water temperatures remain consistently at or below 60°F
* Nighttime temperatures are regularly cool.
* The leaves have mostly fallen (if possible).
* You no longer plan on swimming for the season.

Waiting until the water cools naturally greatly reduces algae growth and helps your winter chemicals last longer.

Recommended Water Chemistry Before Closing

* Free Chlorine: 1–3 ppm (raise to the recommended winter closing level before covering)
* pH: 7.4–7.6
* Total Alkalinity: 80–120 ppm
* Calcium Hardness
* Vinyl Pools: 150–250 ppm
* Fiberglass Pools: 175–250 ppm
* Cyanuric Acid (Stabilizer): 30–50 ppm
* Salt Level: Follow your salt system manufacturer’s recommended operating range before winterizing.

Before You Install the Winter Cover

✔ Test and balance the water.

✔ Thoroughly vacuum and brush the pool.

✔ Clean or backwash the filter.

✔ Add the proper winterizing chemicals.

✔ Lower the water level if appropriate for your cover type.

✔ Blow out and winterize plumbing lines if required.

✔ Drain and protect pool equipment.

✔ Install and secure the winter cover.

Protect Your Investment

A pool is a major investment, and proper winterization helps protect it for years to come. Closing your pool at the right time—with balanced water—reduces the chance of algae, staining, corrosion, and costly repairs while making your spring opening quicker and more enjoyable.

Not sure if your pool is ready to close?

Bring a water sample in and our team will professionally test your water, recommend any needed adjustments, and help ensure your pool is protected throughout the winter season.
