*Spring Shade Garden*

Lots of wins going on in this garden we completed in 25’.

Thanks to a deep reservoir of water, the pump on the bubbling rock chugged along all through the deep cold winter, and kept the birdies hydrated. Found an owl pellet at the base of the feature during Spring maintenance. Yum.

That same cold winter brought us a nice dose of snow, and a pretty cool and wet Spring, allowing these cool season grasses and flowers to fourish.

Happy Blooms:

- Aquilegia canadensis
- Packera aurea
- Phlox divaricata
- Sedum ternatum
- Tiarella cordifolia

Happy Foliage:

- Carex pennsylvenica
- Carex flacca
- Carex flaccosperma
- Onoclea sensibilis
- Polystichum acrostichoides

Very excited to see how the warm season plants in the sunny spots fill in this season!!

Cheers to brave customers who trust us to build awesome gardens! Thank you!!!

*It’s DESIGN season*

It’s the time of year where I debate whether the business is failing, or I’ll be swamped with work. Nobody knows! Only time will tell.

It’s also the time of year where I get to put together some designs.

Now, I’m not here to make pretty drawings. Im here to make functional landscapes that are enjoyable to experience. So, my designs aren’t awesome — they are a means to an end. They help me translate ideas into a palletable form for customers to interpret and understand (well enough (hopefully)). Because at the end of the day, customers are paying me for a finished product.

Side note:

To the 500 people that will reach out to me this season asking if I draw DIY designs. No, I do not. One day, if/when I had a full-time designer on staff and a good system in place for people to follow video instructions, I would love to. In the meantime, the idea gives me nightmares of being trapped in an endless pile of emails titled “is this plant dying?”.

In the meantime, I am sorry.

Here are some recent designs on the simpler side of things.

*Stage 1 Complete*

Last cap installed just in time for arctic winter to pay us a visit. Will be returning to accompany the shrubs with a good dose of native plugs. And some river rocks.

Installed using EP Henry CastStone Block. Product has been discontinued, and I see why. But damn if it ain’t a pretty wall block.

Capped with 2” thermalled bluestone.

Now I’m ready to get my hands back on some natural stone 🪨 🪨🪨🪨🪨🪨🪨🪨🪨🪨

Thank you for all of your help, expertise, and wisdom Brent Palsgrove. You were integral to the build.

*Backyard Check-in*

The plugs are creeping along; trying to survive the cool and soggy, then blazing hot and humid, now cool, dry….season.

This is month #4, post-install. Couldn’t bare waiting another year to capture something here.

Most things are happy here….some things just aren’t (Anemone got burned out, a Spice bush got caught in a hole of full sun at the base of a Spruce tree (somehow), and a kalmia died…surprise surprise). To be replaced here shortly.

VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION:

Does anyone have space for me to start a retail nursery? Just need some space and water - we can make the rest happen.

THANK YOU:

*Bizzy Roadside Bug Stop*

Wd’re on year number 3 for this commercial pollinator garden.

Year number 1 was a success, but lacked diversity/seasonal interest.

Year number 2 we did a large removal and replacement

Year number 2.5 we took out old shrubs and planted more

Year number 3 is looking pretty fun so far.

Year 3.5 will include planting to fill some remaining holes, and then hopefully:

Year 4 will be the first of a final stage.

Gardening is a fluid and dynamic endeavor that requires trust, resilience, and above all else, courage. So often people give up just before the garden is about to take off and show its full potential. It’s a heartbreaking mistake…..one must have hope to see through the rough parts.

Very grateful for the folks @ West Lancaster Animal Hospital for allowing us grace during this process.

Happy early Autumn 🍃🌼

*Pollinator Palooza*

It’s year #3 for this backyard gem, and I think it’s looking pretty happy. Grateful for the homeowners who are taking care of their native gardens, and allowing us to come in and help them with that work.

Persistent maintenance during the first few years is THE difference between a great garden, and a mess.

It’s why we now offer maintenance services to new and existing customers!! 🌾

This garden features:

- Permeable Walkway
- Rain Garden
- Boulders
- Pollinator Garden

Thank you again to for the fantastic film captures of this beloved backyard 🙏🏻❤️

*Summer Check-in*

It’s been hot. The thermoses of cold water cannot satiate the thirst….we only sweat more humidity.

My neck is burned. I am tired. The days are shortening, while I need 30 hour days to finish the work.

Fall is coming. More plants are coming. The fall of America is….

But yet the flowers continue to grow and bloom. The clouds bring reprieve. New beginnings sprout from beneath the surface.

Things are changing.

Here are some summery shots from our in-house photographer

I’ll be returning when I have more to offer - right now rest and work leave no time for socials.

New website dropping soon ❤️

Cheers 🍻

*Blooming Raingarden*

This beauty was installed 20 months ago for a conservation-minded local church. Members of the congregation were concerned about the effects of their stormwater running straight into the (extremely) over-saturated sewer system.

Lancaster county’s waterways have been degraded quite incredibly over the past 300+ years due to land clearing, dams, and now development and chemical use in agriculture.

When looking for ways to mitigate the toxic loads going into our waterways, slowing down and filtering stormwater flow with native habitat both beneficially impacts our waterways, as well as our immediate spaces; like the side of this church. Now there is food, shelter, and beauty for fauna (including human) to enjoy and thrive in and amongst.

The congregation took advantage of a wonderful program through to make this project happen, as well as another onsite.

If you’re looking for a less-industrial option for stormwater management on your property, we may have some options for you.

Happy summer 🌿🌼🌧️

*Modern Front Yard*

Very happy to have had the opportunity to create this garden. We were poached from one of our social media pages, and decided to take the customer up on the offer to travel to Maplewood, NJ.

Thanks to my buddy pescatore_stone for finding these bluestone pillars, so we could bring this idea to life.

After 3 long days, 2000 plugs, and a lot of take-out, we are heading back to Lancaster to be with our families. Thanks goes to my awesome crew members for coming all this way and putting in some hard labor.

If anyone wants more fun stone work, please just reach out!
