The cracked and peeling bark of this maple tree may be influenced by its buried root flare, which is a result of a tree being planted too deeply. Buried root flares often invite bark and trunk rot issues and cause roots to wrap around the tree below the soil surface. In time, these problems could jeopardize the tree’s health and appearance and may shorten the life of the tree.

Buried root flare issues can often be remedied with a tree care procedure called a root collar excavation – also known as an RCX - and with the cooler temperatures of the fall season, now is an ideal time to schedule this service.
