This is why you DON’T bury old concrete steps underneath a new deck. It will always come back to bite someone eventually.
We started removing the existing deck and uncovered these old concrete steps that had simply been built over and forgotten about. Once they came out, we found years of trapped moisture, dirt, organic material, and deterioration hidden against the house.
What looked like a straightforward deck/step project quickly turned into uncovering an area that now needs to be properly evaluated, repaired, sealed, and protected before anything new goes back over it.
This is one of those situations where doing something the “easy way” years ago just transfers the problem — and the bill — to the next homeowner or contractor.
Demo is often where the real story of a property gets told.
Remove what shouldn’t be there.
Expose the problem.
Fix it correctly.
Then build it back so the next guy doesn’t have to fix your shortcut.
That’s the Well Done way.
