When you’ve experienced the LiveAgain difference once, you know exactly who to call the next time.

We first worked with these clients back in 2022. When they purchased their new home and discovered a failing stone wall, an outdated front entrance, and no real outdoor gathering space, they trusted us once again to create the transformation the property deserved.

The result is a completely custom hardscape designed to feel as though it has always belonged here.

At the heart of the project is a one-of-a-kind irregular Pennsylvania bluestone patio and walkway, carefully laid to showcase the natural color, character, and individuality of every stone.

Surrounding the gathering space are custom masonry pillars supporting engineered, freestanding cedar light posts—built with the structural strength required to stand independently while providing a warm, natural architectural feature for the future overhead lighting.
We also rebuilt the deteriorating stonework and reshaped the surrounding landscape with natural stone walls that complement the wooded Lake Wallenpaupack setting.

This is more than a new patio. It is a welcoming front entrance, a comfortable place to gather, and a hardscape built to remain.

What’s wrong with this retaining wall? 👀

At first glance, the wall itself might not look too bad—but the problem is underneath it.

This wall was installed with:
❌ No buried base course
❌ Bottom course sitting on only about 2" of quarry dust
❌ Quarry dust placed directly over native dirt

A properly constructed segmental retaining wall starts below grade. The first course should be buried and supported by a properly excavated, compacted aggregate base—not a thin layer of quarry dust sitting on soil.

Why does it matter?

As the soil underneath settles, holds moisture, freezes and thaws, the wall can settle, shift, rotate, and lose alignment. Once the foundation moves, everything built on top of it moves too.

The part of a retaining wall you CAN’T see is often the most important part.

That’s why at LiveAgain Landscaping, we don't just build walls to look good on completion day—we build the foundation so they're made to last.

A patio this new shouldn't need to be rebuilt.

But this one did.

Installed only a couple of seasons ago, this bluestone patio was already failing. Frost heaves had left the stone very uneven, the jointing material was breaking down, w**ds were beginning to take hold, and continued erosion would only make the problems worse.

And the real issue wasn't what you could see — it was what was underneath.

The patio had been installed over an inferior dense-grade base that was retaining moisture. In Northeast Pennsylvania, trapped moisture combined with freeze-thaw cycles can quickly lead to movement, heaving, and premature failure.

So we didn't just reset a few stones and replace the joint material...

We rebuilt it from the ground up.

✓ Full excavation of the existing base
✓ Proper sub-base preparation
✓ Clean, open-graded drainage base
✓ Bluestone carefully leveled and reset
✓ Finished with Gator Nitro Joint Sand

Gator Nitro is a high-performance, permeable jointing material designed for natural stone and paver installations. It creates strong, durable joints while allowing water to drain through — helping resist erosion, w**d growth, and joint washout.

The result? A restored bluestone patio built to manage water properly and stand up to the seasons ahead.
