Has your car key been made since the late 1990s? There is a small chip inside it that has to be programmed to your car. A copy from the hardware store can turn in the lock and still not start the engine.

Did You Know?

Many commercial buildings still use lock hardware systems that can't be rekeyed without replacing hardware entirely. Rekeying your locks lets you change who has access after an employee leaves, without swapping the whole lock.

If you've ever had an employee turnover and never touched the locks, that is a gap in your building's security.

Locksmith Tip of the Day

If your key is sticking or hard to turn in the lock, don't force it and don't spray WD-40 into the cylinder. WD-40 attracts dust and grime over time and can actually make the lock stickier down the road. Use a silicone-based lock lubricant instead, a few sprays into the keyway usually solves it.

A dad in Lakeside called us this week, worried. His teenage daughter had gotten locked out of her 2018 Honda Accord after the door key and the remote both stopped working at once. He had the car towed straight to the shop. I rekeyed the driver door and cut her a new key within the hour, and she was back on the road.

Stuff like this is why I always tell people: get a spare key made before you need one, not after.

Anyone else waited too long to get a spare cut?
