Wow! Ant calls are pouring in right now. Here’s what’s happening across Polk County this June. 🐜🐜🐜

The combination of hot, muggy weather and those late afternoon thunderstorms is creating perfect conditions for all kinds of pest activity across Central Florida. We’re seeing increased calls for ants, mosquitoes, roaches, spiders, millipedes, and other moisture-loving pests.

But by far, the biggest trend right now is ants.

As the ground becomes saturated from repeated rainfall, ant colonies are often forced to relocate. That means workers, swarmers, and entire colonies start showing up in places homeowners don’t expect. Kitchens, bathrooms, garages, patios, and even electrical outlets can suddenly become active seemingly overnight.

Flying ant reports have also been pouring in as colonies take advantage of the warm temperatures and high humidity to reproduce and establish new nests.

If you’ve noticed more bugs around your home lately, you’re not imagining it. June is one of the most active months of the year for pest activity here in Polk County.

Stay dry out there, and as always, don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions about what you’re seeing around your home.

This type of stuff is important for homeowners to understand.

Researchers at the University of Florida have spent years studying hybrid termites and helping separate fact from fiction. While these termites can form large colonies and cause significant damage if left unchecked, they are not invincible and they can still be effectively managed with proper termite protection and regular inspections.

At Florida Pestworx, we believe informed homeowners make better decisions. If you own a home in Central Florida, termite prevention and early detection remain your best defense regardless of what species may be in your area.

Take a look at this article from UF/IFAS and let us know what questions you have about termites, bait stations, or protecting your home.

You've probably seen the “super-termite” headlines. Our UF Entomology & Nematology Department experts have compiled 10+ years of research to help you debunk the myths surrounding these hybrid termites 🔗 tr.ee/GtncsYgWYo

At Florida Pestworx, we go the extra mile to make pest management as transparent, honest, and customer-friendly as possible. We understand that finding insects inside your home can be stressful, and our goal is to help protect not only your property, but your peace of mind as well.

In return, we simply ask that we treat each other with the same respect we’d all want for ourselves.

We’re not the cheapest company in town, and we don’t try to be. We focus on providing the highest level of service possible through Assessment Based Pest Management, a science-driven approach that puts inspection and evaluation ahead of unnecessary pesticide applications.

As a beekeeper, I care deeply about protecting pollinators, fish, wildlife, and the environment. Because of that, I’m not going to spray every living insect that happens to appear on your property. We treat based on inspection findings, pest pressure, and what is both effective and responsible.

I wish this statement wasn’t necessary, but experience has taught me that it’s worth saying.

We’re straightforward people. We work hard. We care about our customers. We stand behind our work.

Most importantly, be kind. We’re all human beings trying to do our best.

Today is a special day for me personally and professionally.

I’d like to introduce everyone to Joe Crayton, the newest Pest Management Professional at Florida Pestworx.

Joe and I have been best friends for more than 30 years. We grew up together and worked some of our very first jobs side by side. Looking back, I can honestly say Joe helped shape the work ethic that I carry with me today. We learned early on that if you work hard, work smart, take pride in your craft, and look out for the people beside you, good things tend to follow.

What I’ve always admired most about Joe is his servant heart. He genuinely cares about people and is the kind of person who will quietly step in to help without ever asking for recognition. Those qualities matter in this industry because taking care of customers starts with caring about people.

Outside of work, Joe is a devoted animal lover. His dog Luna and his two cats are a huge part of his life, and anyone who knows Joe knows how much they mean to him.

Fresh from the Wild and Wonderful State of West Virginia, Joe has made the move to Florida and joined the Florida Pestworx family. After three decades of friendship, it’s pretty special to have him standing alongside me as we continue building something we’re proud of.

Please join me in welcoming Joe Crayton to the team. We’re excited to have him here and even more excited for the families and businesses he’ll be serving throughout our community.

Florida is home to more than 900 species of spiders, and the overwhelming majority are harmless and beneficial predators that help reduce mosquitoes, flies, moths, and other nuisance insects around homes.

Many homeowners in Lakeland, Bartow, and Mulberry are familiar with black widows, but very few realize how common brown widow spiders have become throughout Polk County. At Florida Pestworx, we now encounter brown widows far more often than black widows during inspections and exterior treatments.

Brown widows commonly establish around patio furniture, soffits, garages, storage areas, flower pots, and exterior voids where insect activity is high.

At Florida Pestworx, we specialize in assessment based pest management, helping homeowners identify conducive conditions that allow spiders and insects to thrive around a structure rather than simply “spraying and praying.”

05/21/2026

Subterranean termites and the invasive Formosan termite (Coptotermes formosanus) can quietly destroy a home from underneath long before a homeowner ever sees the warning signs. In this case, a termite swarm revealed active termite pressure beneath this manufactured home after colonies had already begun damaging flooring and structural wood components.

Many homeowners are shocked to learn that termites can travel through tiny expansion gaps, cracks, and hidden voids to gain access inside a structure. Formosan termites are especially aggressive due to their massive colony size, often containing hundreds of thousands to millions of termites capable of causing significant structural damage in a relatively short period of time.

This is one of the reasons many homeowners choose the Trelona ATBS Annual Baiting System as part of their termite protection plan. Trelona stations are strategically installed around the structure to intercept foraging termites in the soil before colonies continue spreading toward the home. The system is designed to target the colony itself through termite feeding activity, helping reduce hidden termite pressure around the structure over time.

At Florida Pestworx, we specialize in assessment based pest management and termite inspections throughout Lakeland, Bartow & Mulberry, helping homeowners identify conducive conditions and choose the right protection plan before hidden termite damage becomes a major repair.
