Keep an eye on your pool's water level!

As Florida moves into cooler, drier weather, wind, lower humidity and cool nights can change how quickly water evaporates from your pool.

💧 Check the water level regularly
🍂 Keep leaves out of skimmer & pump baskets
🔥 Watch water levels closely when using your pool heater
⚙️ Don't let the water fall too low at the skimmer
👀 If you're adding water constantly, don't automatically assume it's evaporation

LOW WATER = LOW FLOW
If the water drops too far, your skimmer can begin pulling air—which can affect circulation and your pool pump.

🍂 October Florida Pool Tip: Don’t Treat Fall Like Winter

October may mean pumpkins, cooler mornings and shorter days—but here in Florida, your swimming pool doesn’t know it’s fall! 🎃🌴

While homeowners in colder states may be preparing to close their pools for the season, Florida pools still need regular attention.

🍂 What Changes in October?

As we move into fall, your pool may experience:

🍁 More leaves & debris — Falling leaves can quickly fill skimmer and pump baskets and restrict water flow.

☀️ Less direct sunlight — Your pool’s chlorine demand may begin to change as the days get shorter.

🌡️ Changing water temperatures — Cooler nights can change how your pool behaves, but that doesn’t mean you should stop monitoring the water.

💧 Changing water chemistry — Don't assume that because you're swimming less, your pool needs less attention.

⚙️ Equipment still needs to run properly — Your pump, filter, salt system and automation still have an important job to do.

⚠️ One of the Biggest Fall Mistakes

Reducing pool care too quickly just because summer is over.

Florida's warm climate means algae and water-quality problems don't automatically disappear when October arrives.

A pool that looks beautiful today can begin developing problems when circulation, filtration or water chemistry is neglected.

🧺 Check Those Baskets!

October is a great month to pay extra attention to your:

Skimmer basket • Pump basket • Filter pressure

Leaves and other fall debris can accumulate much faster than homeowners realize.

A packed skimmer basket can restrict water flow—and allowing debris to reach the pump basket can create additional problems.

🧂 Have a Salt Pool?

Don't assume your salt system should remain at the exact same setting year-round.

As weather, water temperature, sunlight and pool use change, chlorine needs can change too.

Continue testing the water rather than adjusting your salt system based solely on the calendar.

⏰ What About Your Pool Pump Schedule?

This is also a good time to review your pool's operating schedule.

But don't make a dramatic reduction just because summer ended.

Your pool still needs enough circulation and filtration for its particular size, equipment and conditions.

⚡ Can Lightning Damage Your Pool Equipment?

Florida thunderstorms can move through fast—and even when your pool looks perfectly fine afterward, your pool equipment may be telling a different story.

After a severe storm, watch for:

⚡ Pool pump won't turn on
🔌 Breaker or GFCI keeps tripping
📱 Pool automation suddenly goes offline
🧂 Salt system shows warnings or stops operating normally
🔥 Pool heater won't respond
💡 Pool lights aren't working properly
⚙️ Equipment displays new error codes

A storm-related electrical event can affect pumps, controls and other electronic pool equipment. And sometimes the problem isn't obvious immediately.

📸 FLORIDA POOL OWNER TIP: Take pictures of your pool equipment, model and serial numbers, normal displays, and valve positions before you ever need them. If something changes after a storm, you'll have a record of how your equipment normally looked and operated.

⚠️ If a breaker continues to trip or you suspect an electrical problem around your pool, don't repeatedly reset it or attempt electrical repairs yourself.

🔧 Do You Know What Your Pool Valves Control?

Walk out to your pool equipment and look at the valves.

Do you actually know what each one does?

Many pool owners don't—and every pool isn't plumbed the same way. Your pool may have two valves, three valves, or newer diverter-style valves.

When applicable, we like to clearly identify the suction lines:

🔵 M — Main Drain
🔵 S — Skimmer
🔵 V — Vacuum Line

But don't assume your pool has all three.

Turning the wrong valve can change water flow and may contribute to:

💧 Weak skimmer suction
⚙️ Poor circulation
🌬️ Air entering the system
🧹 A vacuum that won't work properly
🔧 Difficulty getting the pump to prime

📸 POOL OWNER TIP: Before adjusting any valve, take a picture of its current position. Once you know what each valve controls, label it and save a photo of the normal operating positions.

Identify it. Label it. Photograph it.

⚡ Pool Pump Keep Tripping the Breaker?

You reset the breaker. The pool pump starts…and it trips again.

That breaker may be warning you that something isn't operating correctly.

A pool pump that repeatedly trips a breaker can be caused by:

⚙️ A failing pump motor
🔥 An overheating motor
💧 Moisture around electrical components
⚡ Wiring, breaker or GFCI problems
🌩️ Lightning or power-surge damage
🔧 Internal pump problems

Don't keep resetting the breaker and hoping the problem goes away. Breakers and GFCI protection are safety devices—especially important around pools and water.

You turn on your pool heater expecting warm water…but the pool stays cold. Before assuming you need a new heater, the problem may actually be somewhere else in your pool system.

A pool heater may not work properly because of:

September in Florida can bring heavy rain, storms, falling leaves and organic debris into swimming pools. Even when the water still looks clear, all that extra debris can affect chlorine demand and water chemistry.

A good September reminder for homeowners:

Keep skimmer and pump baskets emptied
Remove leaves and debris before they settle on the pool floor
Check water chemistry after periods of heavy rain
Watch the water level after storms
Don't assume clear water means properly balanced water

Why it matters: Leaves and other organic material consume chlorine as they break down. Heavy Florida rain can also change water chemistry and dilute sanitizer levels. Catching these changes early can help prevent cloudy water and algae problems.
