Milieu Landscaping

It’s Transformation Tuesday and this time we are bringing the outdoors in with a four-generation garden sanctuary.
The genesis of this project was simple: bring the outdoors in. Our goal was to create a screened pavilion that offers the immersive feeling of being right in the garden. To achieve a seamless transition, we carefully matched the masonry details, materials, and paving patterns from the surrounding patio space.
The centerpiece fireplace was converted to gas for effortless warmth and beauty, positioned so it can be enjoyed from the patio, inside the pavilion, or from within the home. Every piece of furniture and spatial layout was designed to foster a direct connection to nature while keeping guests comfortable and protected from the elements.
Milieu brought the full scope of its design expertise and skilled craftsmanship to this project—incorporating custom lighting, irrigation, an outdoor kitchen, gas lanterns, lush plantings, turf, complex drainage solutions, and more.

A special thank you to our partners at Warman Construction for their incredible vision and expertise.
Today, four generations of family can gather in tranquility to experience the simple wonders of nature together.

We’re still at it! We’re adding new plant friends to garden spaces and taking full advantage of one of the most beautiful times of year to plant. 🪏

We love fall! 🍂 The weather, the colors—it all has its own vibe here in the Chicagoland area. Even the light seems to hit differently this time of year.

Considering a little fall color? These are some of our fall foliage favorites:

🔥 Burning Bush — As its name suggests, this shrub puts on a fiery fall display, transforming into vivid shades of red.

🍁 Autumn Blaze Maple — Fast-growing and reliably dramatic, this maple brings brilliant shades of red and orange to the landscape.

🌳 Ginkgo — A true fall showstopper. Its fan-shaped leaves turn a brilliant golden yellow before creating a spectacular carpet of color.

🌿 Serviceberry — A wonderful multi-season plant, with delicate spring blooms, summer berries, and gorgeous orange-red fall foliage.

🌼 Witchhazel — A little different, and all the more interesting for it. Depending on the variety, its foliage turns rich yellow to orange in fall, with the added bonus of fragrant, spidery flowers.

Fall may be winding its way through the landscape, but there’s still plenty of planting, planning, and garden-making to do. Bring on the color! 😍

It’s Transformation Tuesday, and this one is a favorite. ✨
Designed as an extension of the home, this backyard was thoughtfully transformed into a sophisticated outdoor living space designed for both entertaining and everyday enjoyment.
The clients envisioned generous areas for dining and lounging, along with a beautifully integrated outdoor kitchen and bar seating—creating a seamless setting for everything from relaxed evenings to gathering with friends for the big game.
A significant grade change presented an opportunity to incorporate a retaining wall that elegantly defines the transition between patio and lawn. A thoughtfully designed walkway connects the patio to the garage, tying the entire space together with intention.
The planting palette was kept refined and timeless, centered around layers of lush green and crisp white. The result is a full, enveloping border that softens the hardscape and creates a sense of privacy and intimacy throughout the yard.

Functional. Refined. Inviting.
And honestly… who wouldn’t want to watch the big game here? 🏈
Swipe through to see the transformation. 🤍

A landscape can be experienced long before you step outside.
For this Rolling Meadows home, the garden was thoughtfully composed to become part of the interior experience. Even the interior designer recognized the importance of framing the landscape through the windows — creating a view that changes with the seasons. The homeowner’s favorite daily view and we have to agree with her. 💚
Evergreens provide structure. Garden phlox and hosta bring softness and color. A simple paver patio creates an intimate place to pause.
And a once-simple walkway becomes a garden path, quietly leading to a secluded backyard retreat.
Every element was chosen with intention — not simply to enhance the landscape, but to extend the feeling of home into the garden.
A view to enjoy from within.
A place to linger outside.
A landscape designed to be lived in.
