If you have leftover brick that’s going to be used on a fireplace or another feature, protect it while the rest of the work is underway. We put straw around this brick to help keep mud from splashing onto it and causing extra cleanup. That’s especially helpful with brick that has a light-colored finish or coating. You can pressure-wash mud off, but protecting the brick first is easier. For white or delicate finishes, consider adding a suitable cover or house wrap for extra protection. We use the same idea around foundations to help keep them clean. What do you do to protect brick on your job site?

A day or two without a subcontractor on site can be part of the plan when you’re building a custom home. We build in time for inspections, homeowner walkthroughs, and proper trade coordination. We don’t always stack crews on top of each other, and finish work like trim and paint takes time to do well.

So if you stop by and nobody’s there for a couple of days, don’t panic—it may be a planned gap in the schedule. If the site sits quiet for weeks, that’s a different conversation to have with your builder. A quality home takes planning, coordination, and time.

If you see a small marker like this on a job site, leave it alone. It’s a surveyor’s reference point—the point they use to locate and mark the other points for the foundation. The stakes around it help protect it and make it easier to spot. If it gets knocked down or dug up, the surveyors may have to come back and reestablish it. Help us save them a trip: leave the marker right where it is.

Bible verse (KJV):
“Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.” — Proverbs 22:28

What’s an anchor bolt, and what does it do? In this video, we show you one set into a block foundation. The bolt is secured in place, with its threaded end left sticking up above the foundation.

When framing begins, the treated wood sill plate is drilled to fit over the bolts, then fastened down. That connection helps tie the house framing to the foundation and resist movement from wind and other forces.

We’ll share more videos showing how the pieces of a home’s structure work together. What questions do you have about foundation work?

Emails from Customers with Hucks — Part 3! This is a funny series, and these aren’t actual customer emails. But in construction, we do get all kinds of messages. Whether you’re a homeowner or a contractor, it’s worth taking a breath before sending something in the heat of the moment.

A good, trustworthy contractor is working to finish your home well, and the final payment comes at the end of the job. Building takes time, and pushing to move faster can mean sacrificing quality. We believe quality comes before speed, and good communication and trust make a big difference along the way.

Before the rough inspections, remember to check the gas-line test gauge. During rough-in, the HVAC contractor pressurizes the line and puts a gauge on it to make sure it holds pressure for the required test period. Take a picture of the gauge and check it daily so you can see whether the pressure changes. When the inspector comes out, they’ll verify that it’s still holding. If the pressure drops, it could mean there’s a leak. Call your HVAC contractor so they can test the line, find and repair the leak, and pressurize it again for testing. Any questions? Let us know!
