ReFIT is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Oregon, providing no-cost home modifications for our physically & financially challenged neighbors in need.

ReFIT is a 100% volunteer operated, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Portland, Oregon. Since 1997, our lovely team of directors, contractors, and volunteers have donated their time and resources to help local families with mobility issues regain their confidence and independence. Our holistic, no-cost home modification services include wheelchair ramps, accessible bathrooms, grab bars, wider doorways, and more. Whether you are looking to donate a one-time or recurring contribution, volunteer your time as an individual, group, or contractor, or attend our fun in-person and virtual charity events, your support will make homes safer and lives easier for the physically and financially challenged community. At 84, Don lives alone—and he wants to keep it that way. 💚

As Don puts it, “Living alone is a whole different experience in your 80s.” When everyday tasks become more difficult or unsafe, having the right support can make all the difference.

That’s where ReFIT comes in. In partnership with Portland YouthBuilders , we built Don a ramp connecting his back door directly to his garage, giving him a safer, easier way to access his car and manage everyday tasks, like bringing in groceries. He also has a back deck where he can safely sit outside and enjoy his neighborhood. 🏡

For Don, maintaining his independence means a lot. As he shares, “It is a fight every day [with aging]… You do the best you can.”

Don knows the value of a helping hand. He relies on the kindness of his neighbors when he needs support, and he understands how much it means when someone shows up.

At ReFIT, we believe everyone deserves a home that supports their independence, dignity, and ability to age in place. Through accessible home modifications and the power of community, we’re helping make that possible—one home at a time. 💚

Our longtime Board Member Chris, of Square Deal Remodeling Co., was there to share more about ReFIT and the work we do alongside partners throughout the building and remodeling community to make homes safer and more accessible for our neighbors.

💚 $21,185.75 FOR REFIT! 💚

We are incredibly grateful Elliott, Powell, Baden & Baker Inc EPB&B Insurance, the Baker Family Foundation, and everyone who sponsored, attended, donated, and bid at this year’s EPB&B Industry Open House!

Together, this incredible event raised more than $40,000 for two small, grassroots nonprofits — ReFIT and Boxes of Love — with an amazing $21,185.75 coming directly to ReFIT! 🎉

A very special thank you to Marc Baker and the entire EPB&B team. For 19 years, they have used this event to shine a light on small, local nonprofits, bringing their industry and community together to provide meaningful support to organizations doing hands-on work right here at home. 🛠️ Meet the People Behind ReFIT: Jeff Jones

Behind ReFIT are incredible people who give their time, talents, and expertise to help create greater independence for others. Jeff Jones is one of those people.

Jeff’s connection to ReFIT began through his 45 years of involvement with the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) and his friendship with Bill Markt. Bill’s son’s experience of becoming a wheelchair user helped inspire the beginnings of ReFIT, and when ReFIT was formalized as a nonprofit, Jeff joined the organization as a committee member, bringing his experience in the remodeling industry and a heart for giving back.

For Jeff, giving back has always been important. He recognizes the opportunities he has been fortunate enough to receive throughout his life and feels a responsibility to help create opportunities for others.

Over the years, Jeff has helped with numerous ReFIT projects, and he’s experienced countless moments of gratitude along the way. Seeing recipients gain access to parts of their homes and lives that they haven’t been able to access for some time has made a lasting impact on him.

One of the most meaningful parts of being involved with ReFIT has been watching fellow team members experience that same joy—seeing firsthand how making a profound change in someone’s life can affect everyone involved.

His time with ReFIT has also given Jeff a greater appreciation for the simple freedoms many of us take for granted, like being able to leave the house and go for a walk.

Looking ahead, Jeff hopes ReFIT continues to attract great people and great opportunities so we can help even more individuals in need. He’s especially looking forward to having more time to give to ReFIT when he retires.

And his advice to anyone considering volunteering or donating?
“Just Do It! The experience will be more than you might expect.”

Jeff has seen firsthand that it doesn’t always take much to make a huge difference in another person’s life. Sometimes, it simply takes someone willing to show up, lend a hand, and be part of the change.

Sometimes, a ramp or a railing is more than a home modification—it’s a way back home.

💚 For Molly’s family, ReFIT’s work helped her mom move more safely and gave her dad the ability to return home from the nursing home and spend meaningful time with the people he loves.

This project was made possible with the helping hands of Portland YouthBuilders, whose students gained valuable hands-on trade experience while helping create a safer, more accessible home for Susan and family.

Molly’s message is one we hope others hear: Don’t let pride keep you from asking for help. Put your safety above your shame. That’s what ReFIT is here for.🔨

We're incredibly grateful to the Wilsonville High School student grantmakers in the Harold & Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation's Schnitzer Cares Student Grantmaking Program for awarding ReFIT a $3,000 grant to support our mission of providing no-cost home modifications for neighbors with disabilities.

Earlier this spring, our Executive Director had the opportunity to share ReFIT's work with these thoughtful students as they learned about local nonprofits and took on the real responsibility of deciding where grant funding could make the greatest impact. We were honored that they chose ReFIT.

This grant represents more than funding—it reflects the compassion, leadership, and generosity of the next generation of changemakers.

Meet the People Behind ReFIT: Linda Nilsen

💚 Behind every accessible home is a community of people who believe everyone deserves the opportunity to live safely, independently, and with dignity. Today, we're honored to introduce Linda Nilsen of Health Insurance Advocates (https://healthinsuranceadvocacy.com/), one of ReFIT's dedicated Community Builders & Hammer it Home Award Winners.

📣 Linda's support of ReFIT goes far beyond a donation. As a longtime nonprofit executive and healthcare advocate, she understands what it takes to build a strong organization that can serve people well. Through Health Insurance Advocates' generous monthly Community Builder support, she helps provide the stable foundation that allows ReFIT to confidently carry out our mission every day.

🤝 Linda also shares her expertise in countless other ways—guiding our Board through strategic planning, supporting our events, connecting people with resources, and offering to help ReFIT homeowners navigate the often-confusing Medicare and health insurance system when they need it most.

🔨 She's passionate about helping ReFIT continue to grow, expand our services, and bring back larger accessibility projects—like bathroom remodels—that can truly transform daily life for homeowners.

✨ When she's not supporting ReFIT, Linda describes herself as a healthcare advocate cleverly disguised as a health insurance agent. After more than 30 years in community health and nonprofit leadership, she continues helping people understand their coverage and access the care they deserve. Outside of work, you'll likely find her enjoying walks and w**e tasting with friends.

💙 What a day. What a team. 💚

A heartfelt thank you to Michelle Maryatt and the incredible crew from Budget Blinds Central Portland for spending the day volunteering alongside ReFIT to help two homeowners remain safe, independent, and connected to the homes they love.

Michelle is a friend and champion of ReFIT, and her leadership continues to inspire a culture of service that extends far beyond the workplace. We're so grateful for the way she leads by example—and for the amazing team that showed up with her.

Together, we stained and painted two newly built wheelchair ramps with a durable non-slip finish, improved Stephen's doorway threshold, refreshed Pam's yard, and tackled a variety of projects that will make everyday life just a little easier.

🏡 Stephen, 80, has called his home, home for nearly over 50 years. As he prepares to use a mobility scooter, safe access means he can continue living independently.

🏡 Pam lives with MS and relies on a mobility scooter. A more accessible home means more freedom to care for her family and enjoy special moments with her children and grandchildren.

What stood out most wasn't just everything the Budget Blinds team accomplished—it was the heart they brought. Employees from different areas of the company worked side by side with smiles, encouragement, and genuine care for the homeowners they were serving.These projects may seem simple, but they create lasting change. Accessibility is about so much more than ramps and railings—it's about freedom, dignity, and neighbors showing up for neighbors.
