Back to the barn quilt!

The design that got the most votes is coming together. Got all the pieces cut to final size and cleaned up the mess. I sweat my shop is getting smaller and smaller. 😂

Next step is getting everything laid out and glued up.

🪵 Weiler Woodworking Wednesday 🪵

I’ve had this big walnut slab sitting in the shop for awhile, and I’ve been thinking about what I want to do with it.

Once I get all my custom orders finished, I’d like to take some time and build something with this just for fun and see where the wood takes me.

I’ve got a few ideas of my own, but I’m curious what everyone else sees in a piece like this.

After starting to glue up this barn quilt, I realized I need to do something different.

With small angle pieces like these, it’s challenging to keep everything aligned when you try putting clamps on. The pieces just want to slide all over the place. The whole process was… awkward.

I decided to grab my biscuit joiner. This is going to help keep everything aligned better and it will make the glue up easier to accomplish.

🌳 Weiler Woodworking Wednesday 🌳

For this week’s Weiler Woodworking Wednesday, I thought I’d go back to where it all started.

These two pieces… a quilt rack and a blanket ladder were some of the first things I ever built when I started woodworking about five years ago.

Looking at them now, I can definitely see things I would do differently. But I also look at them and feel pretty proud, because this is where the journey started.

Five years of learning, making mistakes, trying new things, figuring things out, and slowly becoming better at something I really enjoy.

When I look at these compared to what I’m building today, the difference reminds me that nobody starts out knowing how to do everything.

Sometimes you just have to be willing to try, make a few mistakes, learn from them, and keep going.

What’s something you started learning or doing that you weren’t very good at in the beginning, but stuck with long enough to become proud of?

I’d love to hear it.

Dust collector is filling up fast. Milling some cherry, walnut, white oak, and soft maple for a barn quilt build. Never made one of these before and very excited to try it.

Milling it all down to about 3/4 of an inch for this.

That’s the thing with custom work… you’re usually always doing something you’ve never done before.

Well I was a big dummy and accidentally wiped the footage of this build 😬😅

The customer wanted something that was going to display her military coins.

With this custom piece there was some learning to go along with it, just like every build. The customer and I both were very happy with the outcome. Awesome piece of oak.

Weiler Woodworking Wednesday:

Am I a hoarder 😂

In the shop, I’ve got pieces of wood that most people would probably look at and say, “What are you keeping that for?”

But there’s always a reason.

“I might use that someday.”
“That’s too nice to throw away.”
“I made something out of that once.”

And honestly, I think we’re all like that in some way.

An old shirt we never wear. A box of something we might need someday. A tool that hasn’t been used in years. Maybe even something that doesn’t have much value to anyone else, but means something to us.

I guess that’s one of the things I like about woodworking. You start to look at things a little differently. Something that seems like scrap might still have a purpose.

Sometimes the things we’re ready to get rid of are worth taking another look at.

What’s something you’ve kept for years that you probably should’ve thrown away a long time ago? 😂

Had a customer reach out saying she was in a bind and needed this sign within a week for her son’s wedding. So I got to work.

The person she originally had lined up wasn’t able to make it.

I was able to squeeze it in and get it taken care of for her. Glad I could help out and make sure she had it in time for the big day.

Another one of those woodworking projects for my house that got stashed behind a pile of boards just begging to be done.

My wife wanted something with sunflowers awhile back. Grabbed a thick walnut board, and designed the sunflower carving.

Filled in with two colors of epoxy, I’m bummed it didn’t get done way sooner. Turned out pretty cool. She decided to put it up above her bookcase.
