An apple a day...
We received al letter from a concerned parent. The letter and our reply below.
Rest assured we continue to work to evolve a wholesome fresh child meal service on a crazy small budget every day. Feedback always welcome.
“Anyway possible to get other fruit? Bananas, celery, peaches, pears, grapes, ect.... my kids are basically tired of the same handful of meals. While grateful for them there is only so much that can be done with or made from Oranges and Apples. They’re now basically rotting on my counter not being eaten.”
Thank you for your valued feedback. I understand you would like to have more fruit variety on our current, free, drive-by, daily breakfast and lunch. I do take information like yours into consideration when I arrange our menus and meals.
Our school food service program is a non profit program and relies heavily on donated items and funds from various state and federal entities. One of those is the department of defense which has been sponsoring fruits and vegetables to school nutrition programs since 1946.
During the emergency pandemic feeding, DOD has been able to provide fresh, locally-grown, Organic, Apples & Sunkist Oranges. The same fresh fruits that our military personnel eat to make them “Army Strong.” There are a variety of canned fruits I can (and eventually will have to) get as well, but fresh is more nutritious and tasty so I’ve been selecting for that.
The daily meals are strictly calculated by USDA standard to provide wholesome essential daily nutrition to children who would otherwise be without. Per the label on the meal bags all foods inside should be consumed within 24 hours. Please, for your children’s well-being do not let perfectly delicious fruit rot or otherwise go to waste.
