Custom Shingles is a premier provider of wood shingles & shakes. Visit our website and prepare to turn your house into a home.

With over 40 years experience, we specialize in helping builders, architects and homeowners realize complex designs through cutting, shaping & steam-bending individual shingles and shakes. Custom Shingles has completed some of the most challenging and unique roofing projects, primarily in the cottage and storybook genres of architecture, and specializes in steam-bending cedar shingles for many diverse roof and wall applications. Our company has focused on restoring the lost art of medieval craftsmanship; which, with no formal training, graced the European countryside with unpretentious cottages. The undulating roof lines, which roll gently over the irregular contours, seem to have a way of making a building an integral part of the landscape—a look the drawing board and tee square rarely achieves. Custom Shingles has been featured in dozens of magazines and achieved multiple awards over the years. Our geometrically complex, wavy, and undulating roof lines, along with the curved cedar shingles, set apart our roofs from the ordinary. We have been all over the United States, Europe, Canada, the Caribbean and Japan for this spontaneous and natural craft.

Our fishscale shingles line the walls of this unique entryway. To achieve the cascading effect, the shingles were steam-bent to conform to the arched ceiling.

Happy First Day of Fall 🍁

Featured here is the home of Architect R. Harold Zook who gained notoriety in the Chicago area during the late 1920’s and 1930’s. He designed mainly Cotswold and Tudor style cottages, each full of character and well-thought-out details. This home, his original Home and Studio in Hinsdale, Illinois, was rescued from being destroyed and moved to a city park. We completed a new roof after the house was moved. Although he was drawn to the Creo-Dipt thatch roof style, he created his own unique way to round the edges of the future roofs he designed by utilizing very short shingles to wrap the rounded edges. To this day, his distinctive finish can be found applied on newer thatch style homes.

This beautifully restored 1920s San Francisco home received a new Country Cottage roof as part of its restoration. Full of details, the roof features steam-bent shingles which wrap the gables and eaves, intricate detailing on the dormers, and a sweeping wave-course pattern throughout. We are absolutely thrilled with how this project turned out!

This storybook home opted for our synthetic Country Cottage Roof System. While still featuring the same rounded gables and sweeping wave courses, this roof also offers a Class A fire rating.
