Roger had us add a generator receptacle box outside his house, plus an interlock and the generator breaker inside the panel.

That setup is what lets you run the house off a portable generator without dragging cords through a window.

Thank you Roger. We appreciate you taking the time to write it!

Your lights dip for a second when the air conditioner kicks on.

We get asked about that one a lot, especially in the summer.

An AC pulls a big load in the first second it starts, and everything else on the system feels it for a moment. A quick dip is normal.

What's NOT normal is lights that dim and stay dim, that dip every time something small turns on, or that flicker on their own with nothing running.

If it's doing that, have somebody take a look at it.

Hope this helps someone!

If your panel has red breakers in it, you have probably already gotten two different answers about them.

One person tells you it needs to come out today. The next one tells you it's been fine for forty years.

Here's how we handle it. We tell you what brand it is, we tell you what we can actually see in there, and we lay out what the options are. Then you decide.

We're not going to scare you into a panel change. We're also not going to tell you it's nothing when we haven't looked.

If you want to know what you've got, that's a conversation worth having.

That bulky cover on an outdoor outlet is not there to look good.

A flat cover only keeps water out when nothing is plugged into it. The second you run a cord out to the Christmas lights or the pressure washer, that cover is propped open and the rain goes straight in.

The bubble style closes over the cord, so it stays sealed while it's actually in use.

If you've got an outdoor outlet with a flat cover and you use it, that's one worth changing before the weather turns.

Hope this helps someone!

We open the panel on every single job. Even when you called about a light switch.

Here's why: the panel is where the house tells on itself.

Loose connections, rust, wires doubled up under one screw, a breaker that's the wrong size for the wire it's feeding. None of that shows up in the room you called us about.

It takes a few minutes and it changes what we know about your house.

And if everything in there is solid, that's worth knowing too! Sometimes the best thing we get to tell somebody is that nothing is wrong.

Open your panel and look at the big breaker at the top. It'll say 100, 150 or 200.

That number is how much power the whole house can pull at one time. Not how much you're using. The ceiling.

Older homes around here are usually 100. Newer ones are usually 200.

It starts to matter when you add something big. A generator, an EV charger, a hot tub, a shop out back. Those are the jobs where the number at the top decides what's possible.

If you're planning anything like that, it's the first thing worth checking.

We have one rule on every job.

When we leave, your home should be safer than when we got there.

On a recent job, the customer only wanted a new outlet on the back patio. Before we started, we found a melted outlet in their kitchen.

So we told them, and we gave them options.

What happens next is always their call. We just make sure they get to make it with all the information.

It isn't cold yet, but this is the one worth knowing before it is.

A space heater pulls about as much power as everything else in the room put together. Power strips and extension cords are not built to carry that kind of steady load, and that's exactly where they overheat.

Three rules and you're fine:

1. Plug it straight into a wall outlet. Never a power strip, never an extension cord.
2. Give it an outlet to itself.
3. If the cord or the outlet feels warm, unplug it and stop using that outlet.

Hope this helps someone!

This one does two jobs on a single install.

It's a Ring floodlight with the camera built right into it. The lights come on when something moves, the camera picks up what moved, and both of them run from your phone.

So you get light where you actually walk at night, and you get to see what set it off. From the couch, or from work, or from out of town.

If you've been thinking about security lighting and thinking about a camera, this is both of them on one mount.

The mistake we see with double tapped wires is assuming it's always a five minute fix.

Sometimes it is. There's room in the panel, we move a wire, done.

In an older house that's already full, there may be nowhere for that wire to go. Then the honest answer is that you need more room, not a quick fix.

That's a hard thing to hear about a report you got two days before closing.

It's still better to know before you sign than after.
