its always refreshing to get out into the long leaf savanna at Dr. Allens to do the annual prescribed burn. And my stomach feels so much better after some pickled daikon salad, cabbage and bean sprouts, fried rice and sweet and sour pork from Mrs. Susan. Thankyou for helping get the burn done.

Burning is a tool to encourage fresh growth for grazers during off seasons. Fire removes old dead growth and triggers grasses to flush new soft nutrient rich growth that grazers can smell from dozens of miles away. Its always a pleasure to burn with the greats, Dr. Malcolm Vidrine and Larry Allain, M.S.

Come with me on a journey through Larry and Andre Allain's coastal prairie restoration during a prescribed burn.

Fire is and necessary natural disturbance that coastal prairie species have adapted to over millennia. The burn completes the perennial prairie plants annual life cycle that drive the fungal soil associations that potentially create hundreds of tons of carbon per acre per year. New soils research is finding incredibly high numbers of carbon sequestered that may be hard to believe. Potentially 500 tons per acre annually. Most of the carbon may be locked up in living organisms, mainly fungal in nature in mature soils ecosystems.

All of this is about soils and environmental health. Carbon is just a number we use to measure an element that helps us track soil health. Its more than carbons ability to preserve available water in the soil for longer periods thats feed the fungal associations that feed a diverse array of the perennial grasses high in omega-3s, micronutrients and minerals that the cattle and quail then graze on. The grubs that woodcock and fox eat. Its about the healthy soils ability to sustain an increasingly nutrient rich product. Increasing soil health and human health exponentialy in perpetuity.

We come to the river to pray. A beautiful celebration of the bountiful diversity of a healthy native prairie. We join together and remember the good ol ways. This land will show us the way.

We recently supplied a wetland mitigation bank with 150 lbs of pure local ecotype native prairie seed. This effort was part of an "Adaptive Management Plan" under the advice and consultation from LA Native Seed Co. and overseen by the USACE and USGS. This effort was to qualify the bank to achieve a high enough status of rehabilitation in order for their remaining projected credits to be released to them, for them to sell.

If conditions are too wet for heavy equipment and areas too large to hand seed, we have another card up our sleeve. We can have your planting drone seeded extremely efficiently. Contact us for details.

Raw grit and a sore behind. Thats how we plant hundreds of acres of wet prairie grasslands every year in soils that are too wet to get heavy machinery through. Often the ideal planting times dont come with ideal soil conditions. We use a backpack leaf blower to disperse native seed handful by handful until every acre is planted while riding on the back of a four wheeler.
