I have been sourcing Crypton fabrics from Sailrite recently and the results have been great. The best prices for the best fabric when need a fabric to stand up to daily use and you don’t want to use a commercial vinyl. It really is the best of both worlds. We just wrapped up the cushion restoration project at the Taj Mahal restaurant in Louisville.

Prototype work. This is where you figure stuff out.

I picked a thin striped fabric for this pouf on purpose. Stripes don’t hide anything, and thin fabric isn’t very forgiving. If the pattern, seams, piping or tension are off, you’re going to see it.

The round zipper was a first for me, but it ended up being one of my favorite details. It makes installing the overstuffed foam core easier and gives the piece a really custom look.

This first one also showed me exactly what I want to change for the next version—reinforced French seams, a darker Sunbrella bottom to handle dirt, and a better jig for cutting the foam core.

That’s what a prototype is supposed to do. Build it. Find the problems. Make the next one better.

And somehow the stripes gave this thing a little Moroccan attitude. I’m not mad at it.
