YELLOWJACKETS: How to Spot Them
As temperatures rise across Greater Lafayette, yellowjackets start becoming a lot more active. While they’re often mistaken for bees, they are actually a type of aggressive wasp commonly found throughout Indiana during the warmer months.
🐝 Here’s how to recognize them:
- Bright yellow and black striped bodies
- Smooth, shiny appearance (not fuzzy like honeybees)
- Smaller and slimmer than many other wasps
- Frequently seen flying low around trash cans, food, grills, soda, and outdoor gatherings
- Often build nests underground, inside wall voids, or around structures
Yellowjackets usually become more noticeable in late spring and summer, but activity can intensify toward late summer and early fall as colonies grow larger.
A lot of people don’t realize they may have a nest nearby until they suddenly notice increased activity around their yard or home. Stay tuned for more on these pesky pests this week!
