Some photos stop you in your tracks.
This is one of them.
In 1978, John Vanderkolk started what would become John Vanderkolk Construction with not much more than a truck, a relentless work ethic, and one other guy by his side. Small jobs. Early mornings. A whole lot of figuring it out as he went.
Nobody had a blueprint for what this would become. Not even him.
And yet, here we are. Decades later, a business that has genuinely woven itself into the fabric of this community. One that provides livelihoods for hardworking employees, supports incredible subcontractors, and keeps showing up for the people who trust us with their homes and projects.
John is a grandfather and a great, the kind of man who never sat down and said "I'm going to build something that matters." He just showed up. Every single day. And that was enough to set something in motion that none of us could have imagined.
To the woman who captured these photos nearly 35 years ago, the late Harriet Kamp, thank you. She had no idea she was photographing the very beginning of something. These images are sacred to this family and this business, and we are so grateful they exist.
This is where it started. We don't take that lightly. 🤍
