Tree Tip Tuesday: The Great Concrete & Foam Myth 🌳

Take a close look at this massive Live Oak looming directly over a driveway and home in Leesburg. A previous owner tried to "heal" a hollow trunk cavity by packing it with concrete mortar and expanding spray foam.
Filling tree hollows was popular decades ago, but modern arboriculture proves it causes far more harm than good.

* Trees Don't Heal, They Compartmentalize: You can’t fill a hollow trunk like a tooth cavity. Trees respond to decay by growing barrier zones to wall off rot.
* Rigid Concrete vs. Flexible Wood: Live Oaks naturally bend and sway in Central Florida storms. Rigid concrete grinds continuously against the inner heartwood as the tree flexes, tearing open new internal wounds.
* The Moisture Trap: Expanding foam and concrete trap rain and sap against exposed wood, turning the hollow into a dark, humid incubator for wood-decay fungi and subterranean termites.

While high up in the canopy performing tree care, we stumbled across a nest of newborn baby squirrels tucked safely into the branches.

Being an ISA Certified Arborist means respecting nature at every level. We paused work, carefully gathered the little guys along with their nesting materials, and relocated them safely to a nearby protected tree so mama squirrel could easily retrieve them.
