Want to lose a few pounds?

Step 1: Climb into a South Carolina attic in June.
Step 2: Stay for 15 minutes.
Step 3: Come back out looking like you’ve been on GLP-1 for a month.

Results are mostly sweat and disappear after two bottles of water.

All kidding aside, this heat is no joke. If you’re working outdoors this weekend, start early, stay hydrated, take plenty of breaks, and look out for one another.

500 people have already viewed this one review… and it’s only been up for three months.

Yesterday, Jon sent me this screenshot because he was surprised to see that his Google review had already been viewed 500 times in just three months.

Think about that for a minute. That’s 500 people who were researching a contractor and took the time to read one customer’s experience before making a decision.

Today we’re completing a South Carolina Safe Home Grant project, and this homeowner was surprised by just how much goes into strengthening a roof.

It’s not just new shingles.

This roof requires:
• Additional roof deck fastening with hundreds of extra nails.
• New structural bracing.
• 2x4 gable bracing.
• Metal connectors, straps, and hangers.
• Reinforcements designed to better resist high winds.

On a typical roof replacement, our crew would usually be nearing the finish line by mid-afternoon. Today, at that same time, they’re just wrapping up the structural reinforcement before the underlayment, drip edge, and shingles can even begin.

Most of what makes a Safe Home roof stronger is completely hidden once the shingles are installed. The real value is in the structural upgrades underneath. That’s why these projects take more time, more lumber, more fasteners, and a lot more labor than a standard roof replacement.

This home has three large gable ends, so there’s a significant amount of extra framing required. It’s hard work, especially in this Lowcountry heat, but these upgrades are what help make a home more resilient during hurricane season.

We’re taking it one section at a time to stay ahead of the afternoon thunderstorms. Rather than tear off the entire roof and risk getting caught by a summer storm, we planned the project so we could safely dry in one section before moving to the next. The crew has done an outstanding job today, and I’d much rather take the extra time to do it right than rush through a project like this.

A stronger roof starts long before the shingles go on.

Yesterday after work, Ryland had a few projects he wanted to tackle around the yard. Before you can build something new, sometimes you’ve got to put in the work to clear the way. Sorry Facebook is being funny about the final picture. I will put it in comments

Instead of firing up a hydraulic splitter, we started with the basics, a splitting wedge, a hand sledge, and a little patience. Learning how to use the right tool the right way is a lesson that carries over into everything we do.

The finished pile isn’t what I’m most proud of. It’s seeing a young man willing to work, learn, and stick with it until the job is done.

Around here, good craftsmanship starts long before a jobsite. It starts with learning that hard work, patience, and doing things the right way still matter.

Those are lessons worth passing on.

Last week we talked about the increase in insurance companies requesting roof inspections and repairs before renewing or continuing coverage.

Briant was one of the homeowners who reached out after receiving one of those notices. The good news? His roof didn’t need to be replaced. It simply needed a few maintenance repairs to address the items identified during the inspection.

That’s why we believe in honest inspections. Sometimes a roof needs replacement, but many times a timely repair is all that’s needed to keep your roof performing as it should.

A River Runs Through It… But Not Through This Roof.

I don’t take many selfies, but when the office view looks like this, sometimes you make an exception.

Today I was back on a riverfront home that Trico Exteriors installed in 2008. Believe it or not, this was the first time I’ve been back on this roof since we installed it 18 years ago.

The homeowners recently added a plumbing vent, so I was there to take a look and perform an inspection while I had the opportunity.

What stood out to me wasn’t the view—although it was hard to beat. It was seeing how well the roof has held up after nearly two decades of Charleston heat, humidity, storms, and hurricane seasons.

Were there a few maintenance items that needed attention? Absolutely. That’s normal on any roof this age. But overall, it was a great reminder that quality materials and proper installation still matter.

They don’t build them like this anymore.

This week, I had the opportunity to inspect a copper roof that was installed in 1932.

Maybe I’m a roofing nerd, but standing on this roof was like taking a step back in time. The craftsmanship is incredible. The bell-curved standing seams, the custom chimney flashings, the details around every pe*******on, and the precision of the installation are all reminders of what true tradesmanship looked like nearly a century ago.

Nearly a century later, this roof is still doing exactly what it was designed to do.

According to the homeowner, it has never had a leak reported. That’s a testament not only to the durability of copper, but also to the craftsman who installed it back in 1932.

In our industry, we spend a lot of time talking about products, warranties, and manufacturers. But this roof is proof that when premium materials are paired with exceptional workmanship, the results can last for generations.

Inspections like this remind me that roofing isn’t just about keeping water out. It’s a craft, and some craftsmen leave behind work that tells a story long after they’re gone.
