“Oh yeah… I can hear the roofers now:

‘Looks good from mi casa.’ 😂

Instead of installing actual metal drip edge, they folded the shingles over the fascia and nailed straight through them with exposed fasteners.

And that flashing?
Got so much bling showing it’s practically wearing a gold chain.

This is a perfect example of why roofing details matter. The little shortcuts are usually the first places water finds its way in.

If your roof system starts looking ‘creative,’ it may be time for a closer inspection.

Not every bad roof deck is caused by a leak.

These photos are from a roof we replaced yesterday, and what you’re seeing is plywood delamination — not traditional water rot.

This home was built before 1980, and over time the glue layers inside the plywood began breaking down. Once that happens, the layers separate, the wood loses structural strength, and the decking can literally start peeling apart under foot traffic.

In this case, there was no way a new roofing system could have been properly installed over this decking safely. Some sections were so weak they wouldn’t reliably support the weight of a man walking across them.

That’s why inspections during tear-off matter.

Sometimes the problem isn’t visible from the ground, and sometimes “just shingle it over” is the wrong answer.

A roof system is only as good as what it’s fastened to.

Roof is complete, but this one’s not done turning heads yet.

Today we’re starting the next phase on this Lowcountry home with brand-new cypress colored siding going on. The new roof already changed the look of the house, but the siding is about to take it to another level.

We’ll be posting updated progress photos soon once the transformation really starts coming together.

Protecting and upgrading Lowcountry homes one project at a time.

NOAA has released the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook, and while predictions are calling for a quieter-than-normal season, those of us here in the Lowcountry know better than to let our guard down.

Hurricane Hugo hit South Carolina during what many considered an “off-pattern” year in 1989 and it only took one storm to change lives, homes, and communities forever.

The truth is, it doesn’t matter if the season is forecasted above normal or below normal when your home is the one in the path.

Now is the time to prepare:

✔️ Check your roof for loose or aging shingles
✔️ Clean gutters and drainage systems
✔️ Trim back overhanging limbs
✔️ Make sure flashings, vents, and exposed areas are secure
✔️ Don’t wait until a storm is already in the Atlantic

At Trico Exteriors, we’ve been protecting Lowcountry homes through hurricane seasons for generations — from Hugo to today.

Tomorrow we’ll be sharing a hurricane preparedness guide from IBHS/FORTIFIED with more ways homeowners can help protect their homes before storm season ramps up.

Stay prepared, Lowcountry.

Homeowners shouldn’t have to play “Roofing Roulette” just to find a contractor they can trust.

One of the biggest things we hear from homeowners today is confusion. One company has glowing reviews on one platform… then horror stories somewhere else. Some answer the phone until the contract is signed, then disappear. Others aren’t even properly insured.

At the end of the day, most homeowners aren’t looking for the “cheapest roof.” They’re looking for:
✔ A company that answers the phone
✔ A company that actually shows up
✔ Proper licensing and insurance
✔ Real local references
✔ Recent reviews from real customers
✔ A contractor that will still be here years from now

That shouldn’t be too much to ask.

At TriCo Exteriors, we’ve been protecting Lowcountry homes since 1973. No gimmicks. No storm-chasing. No disappearing after the job is done. Just local experience, communication, and standing behind our work.

If you’re researching roofing companies, ask questions. Check reviews. Verify insurance. Look at recent work. A good contractor won’t be offended by any of it.

Sometimes a leak isn’t just one problem, it’s multiple issues working together over time.

This North Charleston, South Carolina home’s chimney was hit with a double whammy. The old chimney cap had been leaking from the top down for years, causing major rot through the upper section of the chase. Then, with no proper kickout flashing where the roof met the wall, water was being pushed behind the siding and running all the way down toward the ground.

By the time we opened it up, there was extensive damage hidden behind the vinyl. We removed everything down to the framing, replaced the rotten structural wood, added proper OSB sheathing where there wasn’t any before, installed new house wrap, reinstalled the existing siding, and finished it off with a custom chimney cap built to keep this one protected moving forward.

A lot of chimney leaks don’t start inside the fireplace — they start on the outside where water management details were skipped or failed over time. Small flashing details matter.

This home is getting upgraded with the Natural Timber color, and it’s looking sharp already. We spend a lot of time in the Lowcountry sun, heat, humidity, and storms, so using the right roofing system matters.
