We installed one of these this week, so here is what it actually does.

A SPAN panel takes the place of a standard electrical panel and makes every circuit in the house individually visible and controllable. You can see what each part of your home is drawing, and you can switch circuits from your phone.

The practical version: you get real insight into where your energy goes, and that circuit-level control is sometimes what allows an EV charger or a heat pump into a home without a larger service.

Furnace or heat pump? People ask us to be neutral about this. We would rather be useful.

A gas furnace is proven, inexpensive to install, and produces heat with real authority on the coldest morning of the year. There is a good reason it has been the default here for decades.

A heat pump moves heat rather than making it, so it does the same job on considerably less energy, and it cools in summer too, which means one piece of equipment instead of two.

For most homes in this region we recommend the heat pump. Our winters suit it well, and the operating cost difference compounds every year you own it. Where a furnace is genuinely the better fit, we will tell you that instead.

You will feel it before you see it. One morning in the next few weeks, the floor is cold, the windows are fogged from the inside, and somebody turns the heat on for the first time since spring.

That first startup is a test, and a system that has been sitting still for five months does not always pass it. A worn belt, a clogged filter, a capacitor that was already weak in April — none of those announce themselves in July.
