⚡ PROJECT SPOTLIGHT | UNIVERSITY PLACE, WA ⚡

Another electrical safety upgrade completed today in University Place, Washington!

This home was still relying on an older Federal Pacific electrical panel, so our first priority was getting that equipment out and replacing it with a modern Square D Homeline panel.

Because this home is located within Tacoma Public Utilities (TPU) service territory, the service upgrade also required the addition of an exterior emergency/service disconnect. This provides a clearly accessible means of disconnecting power from outside the home and brings the service configuration up to current requirements.

But we didn't stop at the panel upgrade.

🔶 Federal Pacific Panel Removed
The aging FPE equipment was removed and replaced with a modern Square D Homeline panel, giving the homeowner updated equipment and a much better foundation for the home's electrical system.

🔶 Exterior Service Disconnect Added
A new exterior disconnect was installed as part of the service upgrade to meet TPU requirements and provide an accessible means of shutting down power to the home.

🔶 50-Amp Portable Generator Connection
We also installed a 50-amp generator inlet and listed panel interlock, allowing the homeowner to safely connect a portable generator during an outage and selectively power circuits from the main panel.

The interlock is an important part of the installation—it mechanically prevents the generator breaker and utility main from being energized at the same time, helping prevent dangerous backfeeding onto the utility system.

One project, three major improvements:

⚡ Modern electrical panel
⚡ Exterior service disconnect
⚡ Portable generator backup capability

This is the kind of upgrade we love doing because it doesn't just replace old equipment—it improves safety, reliability, and emergency preparedness all at once.

If your home in University Place, Tacoma, Lakewood, Steilacoom, or the surrounding Pierce County area still has an older electrical panel—or you're considering adding generator backup—Ascend Electric can help you evaluate your options and build a system that makes sense for your home.

⚡ THIS IS WHAT A LOOSE ELECTRICAL CONNECTION CAN DO

We recently responded to a service call in Olympia, WA for a homeowner experiencing a breaker that kept tripping.

When we opened the electrical panel, we found something that immediately got our attention:

🔥 The wire termination at the breaker was glowing red—even though the breaker handle was still in the ON position.

After investigating, we found that the conductor had not been properly seated under the breaker's termination screw. The poor connection had been generating enough heat that approximately 3 inches of the wire insulation had melted away, and the breaker termination itself was heat-damaged and no longer usable.

The photos are from the actual service call.

Why can a loose connection get so hot?

Electrical connections need firm, proper contact. A loose or improperly made termination can create increased resistance at the connection point.

As current flows through that high-resistance connection, heat can build up. The connection can deteriorate further, creating even more heat and potentially leading to arcing, damaged insulation, melted electrical equipment, or fire.

And here's an important part of this story:

A breaker being in the ON position does not mean everything downstream—or even at the breaker termination—is okay.

Circuit breakers primarily protect against conditions such as overloads and short circuits. A poor connection can sometimes generate dangerous localized heating without immediately producing the type of overcurrent needed to trip the breaker.

⚠️ Don't ignore electrical warning signs

If you're experiencing repeated breaker trips, flickering lights, buzzing or crackling, burning smells, warm outlets or switches, discoloration, or intermittent power, something is telling you the electrical system needs attention.

Repeatedly resetting a breaker without determining why it is tripping can allow an underlying problem to remain.

In this case, opening the panel and investigating the problem revealed a connection that had already suffered significant heat damage.

This is also why proper electrical workmanship matters. Conductors need to be correctly prepared, fully seated in terminals, and connections made according to the equipment manufacturer's requirements. What looks like a small detail during installation can become a serious problem years later.

⚡ EV CHARGER INSTALLATION COMPLETE | LACEY, WA 🔌🚗

Another home in Lacey, Washington is ready for convenient at-home EV charging!

For this project, Ascend Electrical installed a ChargePoint Level 2 EV charger and the electrical infrastructure needed to support it. We ran the new circuit from the home's electrical service to the charger location using a clean exterior conduit installation and securely mounted the charging equipment.

A home EV charger isn't just about plugging in your car. The electrical system behind the charger needs to be properly designed for the continuous load EV charging can place on a circuit.

For an EV charger installation, we look at things like:

⚡ Available electrical service capacity
🔌 Proper circuit and breaker sizing
📏 Conductor sizing and routing
🌧️ Outdoor-rated wiring methods and materials
🛡️ Required electrical protection
🔧 Secure charger mounting and placement
✅ Testing and safe operation

The result on this Lacey project is a clean, permanent charging setup that gives the homeowner the convenience of charging their EV right at home.

Thinking about installing a Tesla Wall Connector, ChargePoint, Emporia, Wallbox, or another Level 2 EV charger? Ascend Electrical installs residential EV charging circuits and equipment throughout Lacey, Olympia, Tumwater, and the surrounding South Sound area.

⚡ Homeowner Electrical Tips
That Old Outlet May Be Telling You It's Time for an Upgrade

Most homeowners don't think much about their electrical outlets—until one stops working or shows signs of damage.

One of the most common issues we find in older homes throughout Pierce County and Thurston County is worn-out receptacles, especially older outlets wired using back-stab connections.

While these outlets may still appear to work, years of use can cause the internal spring connections to weaken. As electrical loads cycle on and off, those connections can loosen over time.

A loose electrical connection creates resistance.

Resistance creates heat.

Heat can eventually lead to outlet failure, damaged wiring, nuisance power loss, or even electrical arcing.

➡️ Signs it may be time to replace your outlets:

⚠️ Plugs fall out easily or fit loosely

⚠️ Outlets feel warm to the touch

⚠️ Buzzing, crackling, or popping sounds

⚠️ Discoloration or burn marks around the receptacle

⚠️ Cracked or damaged outlets

⚠️ Flickering lights or intermittent power when a cord is moved

Replacing older outlets isn't just about appearance—it's an opportunity to improve the safety and reliability of your home's electrical system.

At Ascend Electric, we replace outdated receptacles with modern tamper-resistant outlets, inspect the wiring at each location, verify proper grounding and polarity, and ensure every device is securely terminated for long-term reliability.

A relatively small upgrade today can help prevent much larger problems tomorrow.

If your home is 20+ years old and still has its original outlets, it may be time for a professional electrical safety inspection.

⚡ Homeowner Electrical Tips
Sometimes a Messy Electrical Panel Is Warning You About Something Bigger
These before-and-after photos tell an important story.
After purchasing this home, the new homeowner contacted Ascend Electric because they were concerned about what looked like a "spaghetti mess" of wires coming out of the electrical panel. They wanted to know if everything was safe and whether the wiring could be cleaned up.
Once we removed the panel cover and performed a thorough inspection, we discovered the messy wiring was only part of the problem.
We found:
⚠️ Multiple DIY electrical modifications
⚠️ Poorly routed and unsecured conductors
⚠️ Several workmanship issues
⚠️ A damaged main bus inside the electrical panel
Finding the damaged main bus changed everything.
At that point, replacing the panel wasn't simply the cleanest solution—it became our #1 priority.
A damaged main bus can create a poor electrical connection. If that connection begins to loosen or separate, it can generate excessive heat and electrical arcing inside the panel. Left uncorrected, that kind of damage can lead to catastrophic equipment failure and significantly increase the risk of a fire.
No amount of organizing wires would have corrected that problem.
The panel needed to be replaced.
We installed a new electrical panel, properly organized the branch circuits, corrected the wiring deficiencies, and restored the home's electrical system to a safe, reliable condition.
The Takeaway
A messy electrical panel doesn't automatically mean something is dangerous—but sometimes it's a warning sign that there's more going on beneath the surface.
In this case, what started as a request to clean up messy wiring uncovered a hidden defect that could never have been seen with the panel cover in place.
That's why electrical inspections are so valuable, especially if you've recently purchased a home or suspect previous DIY electrical work.
At Ascend Electric, we provide:
⚡ Electrical safety inspections
⚡ Homebuyer electrical inspections
⚡ Electrical panel replacements
⚡ Electrical troubleshooting
⚡ Service upgrades
⚡ Residential electrical repairs
If you've recently purchased a home or your electrical panel leaves you with more questions than answers, we'd be happy to help you understand exactly what you're working with.

⚡ Homeowner Electrical Tips
Why Do GFCI Outlets Need to Be Replaced?

Did you know the GFCI outlets in your home are designed to save lives—but they don't last forever?

If you've ever noticed the "TEST" and "RESET" buttons on an outlet in your bathroom, kitchen, garage, laundry room, crawl space, basement, or outside your home, you've seen a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI).

These outlets are required in many areas of your home because they help protect against electrical shock where water and electricity can come into contact.

Why do GFCI outlets wear out?

Unlike a standard electrical outlet, a GFCI contains sensitive electronic components that constantly monitor the flow of electricity.

Over time, those components can deteriorate due to:

✔️ Age

✔️ Electrical surges

✔️ Moisture and humidity

✔️ Frequent tripping

✔️ Normal wear and tear

When that happens, the outlet may no longer provide the level of protection it was designed for.

Signs your GFCI outlet may need replacement:

⚠️ It won't reset.

⚠️ It trips repeatedly for no apparent reason.

⚠️ The TEST button doesn't trip the outlet.

⚠️ The RESET button won't stay engaged.

⚠️ It's been in service for many years and has never been tested or replaced.

Here's a simple safety tip:

Take one minute each month to press the TEST button.

The outlet should immediately shut off power. Press RESET to restore power.

If it doesn't operate correctly, it's time to have the outlet inspected by a licensed electrician.

A properly functioning GFCI is one of the simplest—and most important—electrical safety devices in your home.

At Ascend Electric, we help homeowners throughout Tacoma, Olympia, Pierce County, and Thurston County with:

⚡ GFCI outlet replacement

⚡ Electrical troubleshooting

⚡ Electrical safety inspections

⚡ Panel upgrades

⚡ Whole-home surge protection

⚡ Residential electrical repairs

If you have a GFCI outlet that won't reset, trips constantly, or simply hasn't been tested in years, we'd be happy to help keep your home safe.

📞 Contact Ascend Electric to schedule an electrical safety inspection or GFCI outlet replacement.

⚡ **Why Would an Electrician Recommend Replacing This Electrical Panel?**

At first glance, this older **Federal Pacific (FPE) electrical panel** may look perfectly normal—but appearances can be deceiving.

Electrical breakers are designed to protect your home by shutting off power when a circuit becomes overloaded or experiences a short circuit. Unfortunately, Federal Pacific panels have been widely documented as having breakers that may not trip under certain fault conditions. When that happens, electrical wiring can overheat, increasing the risk of equipment damage or even an electrical fire.

That doesn't mean every Federal Pacific panel is an immediate emergency, but it **does** mean it's worth having a licensed electrician inspect your electrical system to determine whether a panel replacement is the safest long-term solution.

🏠 **Do you know what electrical panel is protecting your home?**

If your home was built between the 1950s and 1980s, it's a good idea to check. Many homeowners are surprised to learn they still have original electrical equipment that may no longer meet today's safety expectations.

At **Ascend Electric**, we help homeowners with:

✔️ Electrical panel inspections
✔️ Electrical panel upgrades and replacements
✔️ Home electrical safety evaluations
✔️ EV charger installation
✔️ Dedicated circuits for HVAC systems and appliances
✔️ Whole-home surge protection
✔️ Electrical troubleshooting and repairs
✔️ Residential electrical service and remodel wiring
