If you’re transitioning a Tennessee garden from summer into fall, I’d focus on these 5 main things:

1. Deadhead & clean up 🌿
Remove spent blooms, dead foliage, and anything looking diseased. Don’t feel like you have to cut everything back yet—many perennials are better left standing until later.
2. Refresh your mulch
Add a fresh layer of mulch around trees, shrubs, and garden beds. It helps protect roots, retain moisture, and prepare plants for cooler weather.
3. Plant for fall color 🍂
Start thinking about fall annuals, mums, pansies, ornamental grasses, and late-blooming perennials to keep the garden looking beautiful as summer flowers fade.
4. Keep watering! 💧
Don’t stop watering just because temperatures start dropping. Newly planted trees, shrubs, and perennials especially need consistent moisture while establishing their roots.
5. Plan and plant spring bulbs 🌷
Fall is the time to get those spring-flowering bulbs in the ground. Start planning where you want tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, and other bulbs to pop up next spring.

The biggest tip: Don’t rush to cut everything back. A little garden cleanup now, combined with some thoughtful planning, will set you up for a beautiful fall and an even better spring.

I finally get the hype around the El Niño Chitalpas from Proven Winners. 🌸

The blooms remind me of oversized snapdragons, and the fragrance is absolutely incredible. They’re one of those plants that just keeps getting better the more time you spend with them.

Definitely becoming one of my favorite additions to the garden. 💛🌿

A trip to the garden center is always a good idea. 🌿🌸

I love stopping by Elder's Ace Hardware to find new plants that add color, texture, and a little extra excitement to the garden. There’s always something new to inspire the next project!

What’s one plant you can’t leave the garden center without? 🌼

Some people have a favorite vacation spot. Mine is the garden. 🌿

It’s where I slow down, get my hands dirty, and find a little peace in the middle of busy days. Every bloom, every harvest, and every new season is a reminder that good things take time.

This little piece of earth will always be my happy place. 💚

Nothing says a summer Friday in Knoxville quite like an afternoon thunderstorm. 🌧️🌿 The garden is happy, the flowers are refreshed, and everything feels a little greener.
