Discolored water is one of those things you want to ignore and hope clears up on its own. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn't, and the reason matters.

If only your hot water looks off, sediment in the water heater is usually the culprit. If both are tinted, you're often looking at rust working its way through aging pipes.

The trick is knowing the difference. If it sticks around after running cold for a few minutes, the source is internal, and tracking it down before it spreads is the right move.

Water makes noise when it moves. The trouble is when it's making noise it shouldn't.

A faint hiss in the bathroom usually traces to one of three places, a toilet fill valve that won't shut off all the way, a small pressure leak in a connection, or air escaping from a fixture or pipe. None of them repair themselves.

Most plumbing problems give you signs before they show damage. A hiss is one of them.
