The stain on the outside is the tip of it.

The main shutoff, the outdoor spigots, the exposed pipes in the crawlspace or garage, and the water heater all get looked at before the cold sets in. Any one of them can be the difference between a smooth winter and a burst pipe at 2 a.m.
